The less said about the Leicester game the better, I think Martin O’Neill knows he got it wrong tactically and has at least held his hands up to that, writes Villa blogger Gregg Williams.
It was also refreshing to hear Curtis Davies be so openly critical of his own performance, to be fair Curtis you were by no means our worst player on the night.
I think our counter attacking game will bring us success against many teams, but we need to improve our ‘plan b’ game.
We lack creativity and while Luke Moore and Gabby are superb on the break, when faced with a team playing 10 men behind the ball they struggle to get involved.
That’s partly due to a lack of creativity in our midfield, and also their style of play. We are still short on options.
Ideally we need a different sort of striker to complement Carew, Gabby and Luke Moore.
I’m starting to wish we’d kept Angel instead of signing Harewood, although maybe Juan wouldn’t have been happy with a back-up role.
We also need a more creative midfielder who can provide a bit of magic when required, either that or we need a left back so Barry can be our midfield inspiration.
Olof Mellberg is doing his best at right-back but his lack of attacking attributes are badly exposed if we are chasing the game.
Overall there’s no reason to be despondent, the Leicester game was a set back but we can all see what’s needed to improve the team and I’m sure O’Neill can see it too.

It is a shame Villa have gone out, because with Manu and other Prem teams going out, the competition could have opened right up for a team like Villa.
