Dogs may be banned from Sandwell children’s play areas, sports fields, schools and cemeteries from January.
Owners who don’t clear up after their dogs in the borough may also face fines of £75. A two month consultation period came to an end last week and council bosses are expected to approve plans next month.
Earlier this year people reacted angrily to an initial consultation exercise which looked to limit the number of dogs any one person could walk and the possibility of a blanket ban on letting dogs off their leads.The second consultation period, launched in July, featured plans to give fixed penalties to people who fail to clean up their dogs’ mess, and to not allow dogs onto children’s play areas, school grounds, sports fields, memorials and cemeteries.
Refusing to put a dog on a lead when told to do so by a street warden or a police officer could also generate a £75 fine. Consultation ended on September 20 and the report will be considered by the full council before a final decision is taken.
Sandwell community safety chief Councillor Derek Rowley said he would be recommending proposals for approval to come into effect on January 1.
The council meets on Wednesday, October 31 at the Council House, Oldbury.

About time I hope this spreads to Wolverhampton as I was feed up of cleaning dog mess of my childrens strip when they played football matches on most of the local pitches
Please dont blame the dogs for this - its the owners who do not take responsibility for their pets actions. Dogs love to run and play its a well known fact, but owners please remember to clear up their mess after all you clean up after yourselves and your kids - hopefully, it would be a shame to ban dogs from running about, I supose though the doggy doctors could then make a fortune telling dog owners theiur dogs are overweight and need excersice

Perhaps now the council’s restricted dogs in it’s parks, perhaps it will place the same restrictions on the “animals” who leave the parks strewn with cans, broken glass and litter or the ones who ride their mini motorbikes!
Rub their noses in it….. and give the dogs a good telling off too.
The owners had their chance and failed miserably. I hope that all play areas etc all over the country will soon be free of dogs and their selfish owners.
Why have we got to wait until January before the ban “may” be imposed? Lets “do it” immediately.
As far as cleaning up after dogs have been allowed to foul public places, I’ve noticed that they are the only ones that don’t step in it because only they know where they did it!
A cheap and simple solution - Supply all of the borough’s dog owners with a cork.

I would also like to know what action is being taken against the individual that saw fit to leave an ill, post pregnant american bulldog tied up to a tree in ‘Warley woods’ I think its called.Full marks to the local DW service that rescued it.
