Elderly people are at risk of ‘harm or abuse’ at a Black Country nursing home, according to a damning report by a government watchdog.
Rye Villa Nursing Home in Tipton Road, Sedgley, was described as ‘not clean’ in the report by the Commission for Social Care Inspection.
A catalogue of concerns was identified during a random inspection in June at Rye Villa which has 27 places.
Inspectors described the home as ‘not clean’ and said it had ‘unpleasant odours throughout’.Their report also said there were ‘insufficient toilets and bathrooms in working order’. In one bath they found ‘dried-on dead insects and flies’.
The report says: “Evidence indicates that the home is not fulfilling its legal obligations and ensuring residents are safeguarded from harm or abuse. There are insufficient staff on duty to meet service user’s needs and staff are not being recruited in a way that safeguards individuals.”
The home was inspected in March when the CSCI made a list of recommendations. Some improvements had been made when inspectors returned in June.
The owner Mr Sohan Singh Nagra today said: “The report is inaccurate. A copy of our response will not be published but is available to view at Rye Villa.
“Most of the improvements the report says have not been carried out have been carried out.”
He said the inspection was not a clear view of the home: “People in the care home like the staff. We are a very loving home.”

i was very surprised to read this article. prior to emigrating to australia in 2005 i worked at this nursing home and i have to say that the staff and management always put the needs of its residents first. the manager was always striving to improve all aspects of the home and exceed the needs of all residents, along with her staff she made the nursing home environment a happy place to be.
on behalf of all the care team at rye villa we are disgusted at recent press reports as this is totally untrue about rye villa and it is and always has been a friendly place to work and visit. We are a well trained establishment and practice person centred care and this has had a bad effect on our existing residents. They are all aware of whats going on and it has caused them much distress which in turn has an effect on us when they are looking for answers to why this has happened when things havent changed since the inspection in 2006 so how come it is now all wrong. The only answer we can give is that we had new inspectors who came with their own agenda and everything that was 100% in 2006 is now in their eyes all wrong. We invite anyone to visit Rye Villa at any time to see things for themselves and judge us that way and not what they have read in the newspaper. The staff at Rye Villa would like to thank sharon for her support all the way from Australia it is much appreciated. If anyone is interested in looking at our report on the CSCI website then please go to the report published in 2006 as little has changed and since the bad inspection report we have since had a letter from CSCI stating that any requirmants have now been made and all is satisfactory but they dont make this information public WHY?
