Villa debutant Curtis Davies today admitted he was not ready for the first team after branding himself a “pub player” following a horror show against Leicester.
Davies was extremely self critical following his first Villa start in the 1-0 Carling Cup defeat last night.
The £8.5m former Albion star partnered Zat Knight in central defence but pulled no punches about his performance.
“It was my debut and I was awful,” said Davies.
“I didn’t contribute anything to the team. I’ve been bigging myself up saying I was ready and obviously by last night’s performance, I’m not good enough to get in the team yet.
Davies, who was substituted 10 minutes from time, added his efforts were “rubbish” and said he “looked like a pub team player”.
Villa fans have your say on Davies’ amazing comments below the story
He said: “I don’t know what it was. I feel fit, I feel fine, so I’m not using any excuses like that. It was just on the day I choked.
“I wasn’t nervous before the game and I wasn’t nervous out there, it’s just I didn’t do anything right.
“It just seemed like it was going to be one of those nights.
“Obviously when you come off losing it’s highlighted, whereas if you win the game you can sort of get away with it.
“But I know my personal performance was probably my worst ever. That’s how I feel right now.
“The team I play in is a good team and the performance wasn’t up to the standard of this team.”
The England Under 21 international has not played a competitive game since March after sitting out the start of the season at Albion as he waited for a move away from The Hawthorns.
Last night was his first Villa showing but he added: “In training I’ve been doing well with everything. But last night I think my passing completion was about five per cent.
“It wasn’t the best performance to start my Villa career. I hope I will feature eventually, it’s just last night was my chance to go out there and show exactly what I’ve got.
“I showed exactly what I’ve not got. I did nothing right, so come Monday if I’m on the bench or even in the stands, I’ll accept it.
“I’ve been saying I want to push the players in the first-team to take their place and the way I was last night, I wouldn’t have pushed the youth team lads.
“I’m honest with myself in every performance and that was unacceptable.
“I set my standards high. Playing against Leicester City I thought it would be a good game to come back into. For me it was nothing to do with my fitness.
“I’m not using any excuses at all. It just wasn’t my day.
“You can’t pull the wool over people’s eyes when you have a bad performance.
“If you’re not true to yourself, you’re not going to improve. If I don’t come out and say how poorly I’ve done, I’m not going to push on and do any better.”

Always thought he was over-rated. JP must be laughing all the way to the bank!!
well he did come from a pub team ?
HA HA, you beat me to it stu.
Stafford Rangers are looking for pub team players on the up…i do feel, however his wages might be an obsticle.
In all honestly though, it’s refreshing to hear a player say “i was rubbish” coz lets face it we all have bad days. You have to applaud his honesty, Blue noses will have a field day when they meet in the league i’m sure, they don’t miss a trick that lot!
Its a bit embarrasing for Villa though to hear him say “I was no better than a pub team player.”
You can’t defend him in the pub with statements like that can you.
Too many more performances like that and he’ll not even make the cat and fiddle, Sunday quiz team.
how dare you call Luton a pub team. he is over rated and we are laughing all the way to the bank
Stuart,
After last seasons results what does that make your shower?
Like Stuart says ” he did come from a pub team” £8.5 million I would have been a better deal at £3.50 lol,,
Curtis Davies A legend in his own mind!, what do you want the Villa fans to do Curtis say thank you for being honest and pat you on the back?. I’ve got a suggestion mate, keep your gob shut, stop shouting your mouth off telling everyone how good you are, wait for your chance and grab it with both hands. Isn’t this the bloke who said the other day “I have bigger fish to fry than Villa reserves”, doesn’t look like it Curtis!. I’m just glad he is out of our club this bloke is a big time charlie who has ideas above his station.
Boing Boing
I knew the midless would try to find a way to make this an anti-albion story…
We sell a player for £8M-£10M (more than the dingles can dream about), we say he is over rated and are glad to see him go, so when he falls flat on his face its US that are laughing - not you bunch of sad acts down the road.
You sold Lescott for peanuts and now watch as he becomes a top prem player and international - MUGS !!!
Gods above I think I prefer having wolves fans on here trying to slag us off!! It seems apparent to me that Blues/Albion and Wolves/Villa fans are cut from different types of cloth. The first being able to string together a simple sentence with some intelligent conclusion, the other play in claret and blue, orange and black!
First glass foot says “I am a premier league player”? Now he says “I’m a pub team player”? I do wish he’d make up his mind. Oh… and whilst I have drifted into this claret and blue infested site.
“THERE’S ONLY ONE GARY MEGSON”!

Eloquently put - I agree wholeheartedly

£3.50!! You mean he’s worth more than a third as much as your ENTIRE CLUB!! LMAO
All I have to say is Curtis-
He who laughs last laughs longest
And boy are we laughing now, and that is AT you and not with you, because of how discourteously you treated us Baggie Fans.
Another great bit of J.P. business.
Happy, wake up will ya…we’re all laughing at the Villa for buying him. Its obvious Albion got a good deal, but it does reflect alittle badly on some of his performances for you last year aswell, so there’s a good opportunity to have a mild pop at our stripey friends.
Smile its nearly Friday!!
ON the Lescott jibe, we got a good deal for him AT THE TIME…yes admittedly it looks poor in the light of today, but perhaps not if he’d been injured for the last two years.
Don’t forget he spent a year out of football, injured.
I think Davis is a good player but as its been said before he needs to shut up and just get on with it. I think its funny that Villa thought they were going to get millions to spend and havent. Waht bit they have got they spend on Davies!!!!!! Lets hope he starts playing well so we don’t end up getting him back!!!!
Anybody who talks about themselves as in the third person is usually deluded. Overrated, overpriced, and now thank god over at the Villa. This guy has shown a complete disregard for his team mates, fans, and employers.
I think it told Villa fans all they needed to know when not a single Albion fan was sorry too see him go, but please do not come and steal Barnett, much better than Davies.
is it me or am i the only villa fan who has commented??????? baggies fans seem to bevery busy with villa and davies . bitter maybe?????
Interesting to see Megson (hero) get his 1-0 bandwagon rolling. Cannot wait for him to come back to the Hawthorns, his reception should be special.
‘Pride Comes Before A Fall’ is the obvious comment. I have said he was/is a really good player but rubbish as a man. I still think he could have touched the skies had he stayed another year under ToMo who was a centre half himself. Now he may well have dug a hole too deep to get out of. Villa have not parted with the dosh yet…Oooer!
we told you so daint we, told ya we would have the last laff :-)boingboing
villa villa 17 - we aint bitter… we are hysterical. Haaaaaaa
Still, at least he didn’t limp off for once.

That argument doesn’t wash I’m afraid Tony. Davies broke his foot TWICE in the same season, missing several months! Lescott is quality and a much more rounded footballer than our friend Curtis, Moxey’s record of negotiating deals is very poor and I’m afraid you were right royally shafted on the Joleon deal!
No sympathy whatsoever for Davies. Hope he gets dumped by MON after the way he treated his previous employers.
Couldnt happen to a nicer player
think wolves n baggies fans agree on that one
davies your overated - not a cats chance in hell of you being in england squad
lescott twice player you are
We were convinced he was the Kings New Clothes
Maybe he was still overawed by the facilities….
I can normally wish ex-players all the best but in this case it is sweet justice.
I hope he likes sitting on the bench watching real professionals - as for England… dream on boy !
I don’t think Albion fans should be too smug about this. If Curtis continues to perform like a pub player can’t Villa simply return him at the end of his loan meaning you guys get nothing like £8.5m for him?
I doe think so stubaggie i’ll have to disagree wiv ya on that one. Davies went to Villa with a prem pedigree having impressed Wenger and other managers of “big clubs”..(you know those with sit down and clap politely when the other team scores supporters)…during his considerable stint in the premier.(how you survived two seasons to this day i’ll never know..)Lescott had no such experience and an unknown quantity at that level with his injury record, 5 million was a fair price, like I said AT THE TIME.
If you want to talk about a poor deal for Wolves try one Mr…Robbie Keane.
Hearing that overrated Davies on Radio 5 say his performance was rubbish has made my day. Barnett is a far better player than Davies ever will be and keeps his mouth shut and just gets on with it. I only hope Davies performs better so that the arrogant lot will buy him as we don`t want him back. BOING BOING.
Wolves (Morecambe), Albion (Cardiff) and now Villa (Leicester) have all been humiliated in this competition this season. When this sort of thing happens you have to just take the criticism, keep your head down for a couple of days and then move on with more determination.
For the life of me I honestly can’t see what Curtis Davies is hoping to achieve by making this sort of outburst. Curtis you need to learn mate that when there’s nothing to be said the best thing to say is NOTHING.
max1806
BE AWARE MATE ITS NOT THE MONEY WE ARE SO HAPPY ABOUT ITS THE FACT DAVIES IS GONE.TO OTHER BAGGIES FANS THOUGH LETS NOT PUT TOO MUCH PRESSURE ON BARNETT GUYS WE DONT WANNA MESS HIM UP CLUBS DONT GET PEOPLE LIKE HIM EVERYDAY
Why did I know this was coming, bigging himself up thinking he was “too big a player to lower himself to play in the Championship”. Message to Mr Peace, maybe an idea to get them yankie dollars in know before Mr Davies comes crawling back on his hands and knees.
We do not need players who do not want to wear the shirt, send him to Walsall and teach him a lesson, at least while he’s on loan we are not paying his inflated salary
I really wish he was not on sale or return. Will not be able to get rid of this donkey for free at this rate!!!!!!
Max1806 - no they can’t return him - its a done deal. Sheff Utd tried to send horsefield back in similar circumstances and it nearly ended in court (they kept him).
So davies IS a villa player - thank god !
pub player, thing is hes left chicago rock and gone to wetherspoons
boing boing
haha cracking comment Happy_baggie , iv just explained this to my work colleague, he looked mortified!! on the other hand Sheff Utd are getting more familiar to the courts than Del Trotter!! But talking about Fools(Villa) and Horses(well Donkey’s, Davies) this is turning out to be quite a hit comedy!!
The lad has let it all go to his head. He heaps pressure on himself. He could never pass a ball anway and it will be a long time until he is good enough for the first team. I sincerely hope he makes it though because we dont want him back at West Brom. I suppose if we were to get promoted he would sudenly think we were good enough for him again.
I do not think there is any chance of him returning. It is a loan in name only, just a way of delaying payment until the next tax year, as stated by JP some weeks ago.
Just like PIG at manu.
34 good point, except Albion should never have sold the horse.
The main mistake last season was not getting shot of Davies and his big time mates after relegation.
8 & 22
I would hardly call £5.5m peanuts for a player who had been out for 12 months with severe knee injurys and who was unproven in the prem.
And it is only a credit to our youth academy, that Lescott has become an established premiership defender with an England call up!!
Can you say that about your youth academy……no, didnt think so.
the kids just an arse lookin for attention, he just wants people to say ‘no curtis you didnt play that bad, you’ll get better’, ego maniac i think. fair play to albion for seeing the signs and getting rid.
albion fans i work with have called him lazy, in it for himself, cocky pretty much since you signed him
40 - so nothing to do with Everton then and playing in the prem with a decent team… and we have already covered the injury situation in 22.
Its like saying Steve Bull was only an England player cos he came through our reserves - even I won’t try that one.
Take the dingle goggles off - just for a minute.
41
i dont often,
no i never agree with your comments on here,
but you`ve got that spot on mate.
41.
albion fans i work with have called him lazy, in it for himself, cocky pretty much since you signed him
You’ve kept that one quiet…talk about horse gate and bolted in the same sentence…they’ve obvioulsy changed their tune coz he said he wanted to leave, and subsequently did…talk about dingle tinted glasses?? that’s clearly a case of Tescos binocluars…tell your mates to go to the Docs I hear they do a dose of reality on prescription.
if ever a player was badly advised by his agent it his davies.another season or two would have made him the player he thinks he is, john wyle has pointed this out .lescot moved at the right time.i wonder what his teammates thinks, last week he said he hadnt come to play for the second team.
Again….i dont see the reason for all of this inter club bitterness….especially from the wolves.
Heres the thing.Davies had one good season for us…and he was steady. He was never worth 8.5 million and i was surprised that o’neil paid that for him( i think martin is the best manager in the league bar fergie).Davies was super arrogant when he left my beloved baggies. Most of us knew that he wasnt good enough.
villa fans must be shaking their heads at his comments. i have never heard anything like it before. did you guys listen to the interview?his confidence is completely shot and from what i have heard he wasnt THAT bad.If a player like davies looses his bottle, his is in a world of problems. tbh i dont mind the villa, mainly cause i like o’neil and i would love them to establish themselves as a european team and break the hold the big 4 have, but i think they have made a really bad signing here, and davies will rue the day he left the mighty baggies.
40. Have to agree with you on that one JD. The Wolves youth acadamy has been far more productive for a while now. The only player of note that Albion have produced in the last ten years is Daniel Gabbidon and Megson sold him to Cardiff for next to nothing!! Hopefully that will change in years to come now that the club have finally achieved Acadamy status.
I value the honesty displayed by Curtis Davies. He could have hidden and taken the flak. This sort of situation can show the true character of a man and can serve to focus his mind and become a better person and a better player. Only time will tell. Does Martin O’Neill buy expensive losers???
I was not sure about him as a player when he was with the Albion and could not see a truly amazing player and england captain of the future. Again, time will tell!
all these bitter albion fans should get one with watching matches in the fizzy pop league.
Well done JP, not only do you run a highly successful football business, you’re now a world leader in ‘tool’ hire! Davies is a joke.
Good job we didn’t palm him off on the dingles though - he’s still better than their centre half muppets.
