Wolves blog: back magic Mick

wolveslogo1.jpgAre we all happy again? I don’t care if Norwich were abysmal; it was a massive improvement from the inept and lacklustre performance against Hull, writes Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd.

It was funny to hear the South Bank singing the virtues of Jody Craddock. Did they ever do that before he went on loan?

He was however a much better answer than Darren Ward in the heart of defence and he seemed to link up well with Breeeeeeeeeen.

The absence of Freddy from the starting line-up was probably a message from Mick that no player is guaranteed their place, and he deserved to be dropped after the Hull performance, but then, who didn’t?

With Gray energetic on the left and Foley exceptional on the right, the balance of the defence looked so much better.

Albeit that Norwich had a powder-puff attack and the usual Wolves tormentor, Darren Huckerby, was about as effective as a chocolate fireguard.

So, are we a good or a bad team?

Is Mick a good or a bad manager?

Astonishing that after the Hull game that some fans were calling for the manager’s head, utter madness. I for one am a big Mick fan.

He hasn’t wasted the millions that previous manager’s have on some terrible signings; Frankowski, Al Jaber, Robert Taylor, Carl Cort, Silas to name but a few.

He has added hungry young talent to a few old wise heads.

Ok he has made a couple of mistakes along the way, but the positives far outweigh the negatives.

With the imminent return of Matt Jarvis and Mark Davies, coupled with an excellent performance at the weekend, the future looks a bit more promising.

If we get 3 or 4 points from the next 2 games away at Plymouth and Leicester, it should give us a good platform to go into October, which on paper looks like a very tough bunch of fixtures.

Wolves fans, what do you think? Have your say below the post.

Nathan, didn’t see the game had to settle for listening on the radio but certanly sounded far better than the previous 2 matches and I for 1 am right behind Mick and agree with your assesment of young and hungry players, lets hope they can now push on and get the 3-4 points you mention and then maybe some of our fickle fans will get a smile back on their faces
Up the wolves from sunny Cyprus

I dont think wolves are far away from really being a prominent force.I must admit i was quitely suprised at our performance against (norwich) we did destroy them in 35 minutes.if you think you have the game won you can relax and play some great stuff,if norwich did not have players sent off wolves would have won by more goals, but thats the secret of having complete control of the situation.best performance of the seaseon so far and going on that look forward to better to come.10/10

Toatally agree….still think we need some young central defenders tho!
still not convinced by Potter, need someone to challenge Henry & Olifinjana……..hope the latter resigns

i will not back him! he has let us down with not strengthening the defence & his anti-anyone who isnt irish agenda is a disgrace.if i am wrong & we win promotion,i will gladly apologise but if we don’t you can do so!

4 mate their are only an handful of games gone, just have faith our defence last season got us to the play offs.

  7. danwolves said:

rowley…do u kno what ur talking about because MM is the best manager we have had in years and the only manager that plays attacking football since David Jones…and MM proved against norwich that we can leave some of our big name players out(eastwood) and still have complete control of a match and look comfortable in victory

    up the wolves

Back magic mick - more like black magic… bitter, a soft centre, and no use in the box.

    Boing Boing !

Dave Jones was a better manager than Mick. We should have stuck with him, look at the great signings he has made at Cardiff.

wednesbury 1;matt murray got us to the play offs, not that defence

Mart - I think MM was right to leave out Darren Ward, after his displays against Sheff Utd and Hull (i think he made a mistake signing him to be honest). I am baffled as to why Eastwood is on the bench, he gives us so much more options and is always a threat.
I still think we will be in the top 6 come May, I don’t think we will make top 2 but hopefully i’ll be wrong.

What medication are you on?? You need stronger.

“Anti Irish agenda..???” as well as questions about MM’s suitability..? This is the kind of negative attitude which has undermined almost all Wolves’ managers for the last 20 years and it definitely gets to the players. We have a choice…..unless this kind of comment is replaced by more widespread and loud backing the team will fail to live up to its potential and Tesco’s will laugh themselves all the way to the premiership. Don’t give them the chance….put your faith in MM…there’s seven and a half months to go…

I agree with you 100%, Nathan. In my opinion, McCarthy is the best manager we’ve had in all the time I’ve been watching Wolves (31 years). Saturday gave us both a timely reminder of how we were playing towards the end of last season and, I hope, a glimpse of an exciting future. I think that, in the main, our Irish contingent have been first class and wish that rowley, wolves would stop uttering his drivel which, at times, borders on being racist.

  15. rowley,wolves said:

timmiswolf;you people make me sick! i’m not the racist,it’s you politically correct fools who are the ones who stir that up. my grandparents are from cork, born & bred, thats in southwest ireland if you didn’t know & my step father was born in athlone, again ireland.so the fact even i know(with my background)that there is a bias, says it all!

Shut the hell up, seriously. I have been reading these pages now since the start of the season and have bitten my lip (well my fingers anyway). It would be slightly more credible if the fans didn’t just flip their opinions on the back of individual results: I love MM - I hate MM. He’s a genius - he’s a racist. Keogh’s awesome - Keogh’s awful. Make your minds up and stick to it.
Obviously the defense is a bit of a worry, but there are about six teams in the entire football league who are completely happy with their back four. It’s also very hard to get hold of good centre backs - real football isn’t like championship manager. How many of you became depressed when Ingimarsson left and now look at him. McCarthy showed great humility by bringing Craddock back, very few managers would have done the same.

Please don’t get me started on Dave Jones either - For one McCarthy’s record is better, also Jones had Lescott. Oh and by the way has everyone just forgotten that Murray is missing, remember him our player of the season, anyone thought that might be a pretty obvious reason as to why we’re conceding.
    OK
We don’t have the best team in the league, fact. But more worryingly, now we don’t even have a set of fans in the top half, so trying looking at yourselves as football fans before bemoaning the slightest setback, in a league that throws up 3 or 4 ’surprise’ results a week.

Just follow the team, they’re trying - c’mon Wolves, you know what your capable of.

    PS: Olifinjana may just be the best midfielder in the league (or ever) except maybe;
“Goal Goal Goal, Michael Kightly, Michael Kightly!”

MK Wolves. Do you refer to the great signings, Robbie Fowler, Jimmy Floyd Hasslebaink, Michael Oakes and Sinclair.

I dont think any of these grandads can last 90 minutes now.

I am much happier with Foley, Eastwood, Elliott and maybe Jarvis (only becasue I have not seen him play yet).

    Only my opinion.

  18. Richard said:

I think that the defense is ok. Not the best in the division but a long way from being the worst. What is wrong is the midfield. No ball winners at all! Olofinjana is not the sort of player we need. He would be better in the prem, where he would have more time on the ball. I think it would be better to get some money for him and Potter (wrong division too) and get some strong championship midfield players. A target man would be useful too, we are far too one dimensional! Why did we buy Elliot? As for MM being the best manager for years, not a chance he is ok at best his team couldn’t hold a light to a Dave Jones side!

Happy Baggie - it’s a sad day when you have fallen into the trap of terrywalsallbaggie by putting boing boing on the end of your comments and talking absolute drivel!!!! Thought better of you, but then again that’s my fault because after all you are an albion fan, jog on please!!

  20. WetWolf said:

Our defence will always struggle against teams that throw long balls over the top for fast forwards to run onto. With Murray in goal this was less of a problem ‘cos he was always so quick to react and came for everything. It was like having a sweeper as well as a keeper. Hennessy is a good young keeper except when it comes to rushing. He just doesn’t command his area like Murray.
Several teams have cottoned on to this already this season and given us problems. Either we need one or two new centre backs with pace or Hennessy needs to improve this aspect of his game. Better still would be a little of both!
Our biggest problem as wolves fans is getting over the loss of Lescott. He was soooooooo good. Anyone who has to try and fill his boots will always on to a loser with the fans.

  21. Happy_baggie said:

nathan wolves - someone had a sense of humour by-pass ?? if I put boing boing just this once, it was to emphasise the fact that i was having a laugh… so jog on and get over ya self.
I thought you were bigger than that pal.

  22. Eddie Wolf said:

Mk Wolves, you having a laugh. Dave Jones? Okay, let’s just right off the £28 million he spent getting us in to 5th place & scraping promotion! Great signings at Cardiff/ Tut tut. You are mistaken. He has thrown together two has been strikers hoping their pedigree will tell. Think of all those flops he bought for us! Silas, Okoronkwo, Roussell, Iversen, etc. Get a grip mate and think about how MM got us in to 5th. No money.

Nuff said. And Rowley, Wolves, get off your high horse!

im fed up with this happie baggie coming on to our sites using his made up sayings. He obviously has no job or cant concetrate on the one he does have, he likes to comment when other teams score and perform well whilst shouting out what his team deserves but never achieves.Sounds like an old albion defender to me

I’ll take Mick over Dave Jones every time. Since Mick came there has been an air of excitement at the club. He may not get it right all the time but had Dave Jones been here, Morgan’s money would have been blown already and we wouldn’t have anything to show for it.
I’m sure when the time comes and the right players are available, Mick will spend but I admire his desire to build a team over the long term rather than try to buy it overnight.

  26. wolveswolves said:

I think too many people on here are getting carried away by one good performance against a poor poor team.

We don’t have enough good players and the squad isn’t strong enough. Playoff if we are lucky and avoid injures.

As for MM well his failure to sign a decent center half is unforgivable

I have just been having a go over on one of the albion blogs about how dreadful some of these things are !! They just end up as a means of directing peurile insults at each other. However it really is a pleasur to see some authentic football chat going on on this one !! This is what it’s about - Whose best Mick or Dave - everybody has there own beliefs and it’s great to see the exchanges without the slagging off. Personally I thought Dave Jones was great and I would like to have seen him here longer. However that’s in the past and we have Super Mick now and I like the way he goes about things. i agree with some of the comments about us Wolves fans that we are too quick to get on the backs of the players and the manager. Let’s support our team and appreciate all thats good about the team. We will have set backs that’s inevitable but come on we’re Wolves fans we’ve survived set backs over the last 20 years BUT WE’RE STILL WOLVES FANS - doesn’t that say a lot ? And let’s not try to hurl too much of the peurile stuff at the Baggies - they love their team (?) just as much as we love the Wolves. Let’s just have some good old chat about football and a laugh along the way without the insults.

  28. bridgewolf said:

Its a hard league. There are lots of other teams that are as good or as bad as Wolves. MM proved last season that a team put together by him can play for each other. We have a young keeper who due to circumstance would otherwise be sitting on the bench or out on loan. A defence that cannot gell yet or maybe never will, this is a real hard problem for anybody to solve, even with say 5 million pounds. Midfield that has not had a settle line up for a while and an attack that has promise and depth. MM will do his best with what he has got and the least Wolves fans can do is be behind their manager. A lot to ask when loyalty to anything is as rare as hens teeth.

Off the subject, but how/why was the late, great Stan Cullis not included in the Times 50 greatest football managers list last week? Slight London bias, yet again, how the London Press did/still hate the Wanderers.

Ignore the Tesco bloggers that infest our sites because of their personal inadequaces like bed wetting at 42 etc & they will go away, its child like attention seeking because they are inferiour to the Wolves. Take no notice of the Tesco Footballing plankton.

  30. Timmiswolf said:

wolves, wolves (25) I think the opposite is true: too many people were getting carried away by a few dodgy performances and lost sight of the remarkable things MM has already achieved at Wolves. We have to allow him to build something and that might take longer than 1 or 2 seasons. If we go up this year - great, but if we don’t that doesn’t mean that Mick has necessarily failed. Additions to the squad were always going to affect how the team played in the short term. Long term, I would imagine that we’ll find a way of playing that will get the most out of Freddy Eastwood (several people’s primary concern, it seems) but let’s give MM time and support. And if, in the short term, that means Elliott partnering Keogh we have to trust Mick’s judgement. In the same way, we have to believe that we didn’t buy a new centre half in the summer because either there weren’t any better ones available that wanted to come to us or there were but not at a price that was deemed acceptable.

  31. Happy_baggie said:

Here comes Roger Southall and his high horse again.. more wit from the pit.

You mention bed wetting - no one else did so is this something that you need to discuss ?? Is this stopping you getting a good nights sleep and thats why you are so grouchy ??

Or are you just another small minded dingle who has nothing new to say ?

Well said Filtonwolf, there are plenty of positive things to concentrate on,
Personally, I prefer Mick to Dave Jones, but that may just be because of circumstances.
For years, Managers have come here knowing that The Club was willing and able to try and buy success. As a result many millions were wasted, and I think Dave Jones was the last allowed to do that.My thoughts go back to numerous last minute attempts (before transfer deadlines)to but strikers which never succeeded.
Mick has come in, and is prepared to build a team.He appears to be his ‘own man’ doing things his way including leaving out aguably the best striker, but is also big enough to reverse a bad decison (Jody Craddock)
Early days but Mick gets my vote and support.

Happy, Happy, Happy resist the temptation to bite back mate and Roger (28) what’s the point of the insults ? Just brings a bad name to Wolves supporters. Couldn’t agree more with your comment about Stan Cullis but why spoil it by having a go at the Baggies. Engage them in honest banter about football. Nothing wrong in healthy rivalry between the fans but coming out with that trash just alienates everyone. Believe me you can have a healthy conversation with these guys !!

Your opening bit is a great option for people to chat about. Even if that does mean getting responses from other fans (providing those comments are not too dergatory !!) By all means have a laugh but for heavens sake let’s keep a sense of dignity with it all.

I’ve just been chatting on one of the Baggies blogs and believe me you can have a decent chat without hurling abuse at each other. And anyone out there Wolves or Baggies fan that wants to hurl abuse at me go ahead if that rings your bells but don’t expect a response.
