The site of a former steelworks in Cradley Heath is about to receive a 21st century makeover.
The derelict eyesore, opposite Cradley Heath train station, which used to be home to AS Rolling Mills, is to be transformed into 40 one and two-bedroomed apartments.
Hagley-based property developer Selbourne Homes has just started demolition work at the 1.3 acre plot on Lower High Street.
Designed with first-time buyers in mind, the three-storey scheme has been welcomed by the community. Top-floor apartments will feature walk-out balconies.
Councillor Bob Badham, Sandwell cabinet member for regeneration and transport, said: “This scheme is a good example of how, if a developer works well with the council right from the start, a development can be forthcoming that meets everybody’s aspirations.”
Prices are expected to range from £120,000 to £125,000 for a two-bedroom flat at the site. The first completions are scheduled for early 2008.

When will the local authority and property developers realise that we no longer want to buy flats? The current market is flooded with them as no one wants to buy them, just use any property search engine and you will see this. What people want is houses, not your designer apartments which they can’t sell on in a few years when their families outgrow them! They do not help to solve the shortage of suitable properties, only add to it. Developers lining their pockets selling (Or trying)as may units as possible instead of considering what the consumer / housing market & country really need.
