As I sat in the Smethwick End last weekend a question crossed my mind, why am I sitting in the Smethwick??? writes Albion blogger Jarrod Hill.
I am not questioning my own preferred choice of viewing but the name itself, currently we have four stands with names that mean nothing to the majority of fans.
Why has our current and past chairmen chosen not to re-name the four stands to honour some of our past heroes, Peace clearly holds no fear of change, we witnessed that when he changed the club crest.
The standard excuse used previously has been the intention of sponsored stands as a way of advertising and thus generating extra revenue, fine, so why haven’t we gone ahead and done it?
Personally I would prefer to sit in a stadium with, Astle’s Brummie Road, The Bomber Brown Stand, The Ronnie Allen Stand, and The Super Bobby Taylor End.
Peace could turn it into a wonderful PR exercise, we could vote on names, have days and games designated to the naming of the stand, special guests and so on, (let’s face it; it would be more entertaining than the current half-time entertainment).
Granted, I have picked my own personal favourites, and fans will have differing ideas on who they would choose to honour (although I think two of them are a given).
Let’s face it, it’s not a new idea, other clubs have honoured their past heroes in the same way, just imagine sitting their explaining to your kids who Bob Taylor was and why we still love him enough to name the stand after him.
“Yes little Johnny he scored the goal that got us promoted instead of the Wolves back in!!!”.
You never know, it may even inspire our current crop of stars, knowing one day the Hawthorns Stands may even carry their names.
So who would you honour, and why?

1st he says he will be happy with just a top 6 finish and now he would rather think about garbage like this than watch the match..
Sorry Jarrod, but you sound like Adrian Mole (aged 13 3/4) and us grown ups have more to think about.
If you wanna re-name the stands go home and build them in lego - the stands DO mean something to real fans - its called tradition and history.
Come E&S - give us something decent to read.
put it this way when peace sells the club this will be one of the bonuses the new owner will have.
They can named them,the ‘Curtis stand,’ ‘the kamara stand,’the koumas stand’ and the mcshane stand! lol

He is entitled to muse all day long - you just don’t expect it to be put in the paper.
I thought the tone & content was a bit juvenile - thats all (and its just MY opinion).
Albion never seem to get any decent stories in here - it just grates after a while.

it says everything about our two clubs when we name our stands after national legends like billy wright & stan cullis & you’re talking about names who are unheard of outside the west midlands

The reason, Jarrod, is not all change is good. I’m proud we don’t play at the Vodafone Hawthorns and that we DO have the Astle gate.

The idea of a blog is to pick a subject and then get people discussing it. Fair play to Jarrod for not talking about the obvious, like your great away win at the weekend.
I’ve probably played it a bit safe talking about the merits of our win against Norwich at the weekend and the vast improvement from the Hull game.
Not that I’ll be discussing Greek Mythology or ornithology in my next blog! All I’m saying is give the Jarrod a chance for actually raising a subject that has got Albion fans discussing.
Happy-baggie… in the main I always enjoy what you have to say, but I thought you were a bit harsh on Jarrod, after all, he is one of your own!

I think a Bomber Brown stand would find broad support. 574 games for the Albion - over 200 goals. And he was virtually a one club professional.

Nathan - I read your blog, and it talks about the FOOTBALL - I have already apologised to Jarrod for being abit heavy, but there is SO MUCH to talk about at the baggies these days, this just seemed a bit pointless (and ignores how well WE are doing).
I know a blog is about picking a subject - but lets make it relevent or we end up discussing our favorite sandwich fillings.

Not been on here before and now I can understand why !! What a load of TWADDLE !! Haven’t you guys got anything sensible to say about football (remember that’s the game that we all love to watch regardless who we support ?) I can only think of one sensible bloke that would be on this site (and he does comment on the Wolves site as well - sensibly)and that’s wba_bomber and I haven’t seen anything from him lately. you`re missing a trick here mate,
if you look from the top of this comments page, you will see the insults began at number 3.
Now the way i see it is the ground rules are very simple,
a Wolves fan comes on here to be derogatory,
then he gets it volleyed back.
If a wolves fan such as Zoff or Bojangles, comes on here to debate the games, then they are accommodated acordingly.
I myself have posted on Wolves pages, comments open for serious debate, and guess what!
hardly any takers.

I admit that some of your comments have been sensible and worthy of a sensible reply and yes you have had some Cr** thrown your way - which i openly condemn. However you have been known to dish out the cr** as well. Living where I do, I don’t always manage to get on to the E&S site regularly to see wkat’s going on but when I do, 90% of the time it’s utter rubbish that’s written. I remember one set of blogs that discussed the relative prettiness or ugliness of the players in the two teams !! I mean for heavens sake what’s that got to do with it ?

Filtonwolf - I’m sure you will agree that the style of postings is the same for both teams (the comments about players looks was posted by a wolves fan)… however it was good natured and inoffensive (if somewhat weird).
As wbabomber said - it is often impossible to engage rival fans in pure football debate, and so micky taking and banter is often all thats left.
As long as its clean and inoffensive - who cares ??
But feel free to leave some football debate and i’m sure it will be answered.

I am aware that you are critisizing both sets on fans.
And you are absolutely right, that purile insults have no point and have nothing to do with football.
Yes i do dish out cr** on occasions, but it is the form of a reposte.
I know the best thing is to ignore such posts but when some one calls you a s*** fan or scum or an inbred
it is rather difficult to ignore.
Regarding the blog, about the players looks,
yes i remember that,

Again you`re right, nothing to do with football,

Happy Baggie you see, it is possible to have a sensible chat without trading insults !! I for one think the nonsense about how the players look was just that - nonsense, but it didn’t prompt me to hurl a load of abuse at the Baggies. I for one think that the blog that started this is quite a valid one. Ok it’s nice to have some history but it’s also good to remeber and honour past players if they have served the club well. I can remember Bomber Brown in his glory days - yes I watched him at the Hawthorns as well !! (and no I’m not a closet Baggies fan !! I appreciate good football and good footballers). He was a great player and a great servant to the club. Would it be such a crime to name a stand after him ?
and don’t forget the southbank - or the “Away stand” as we know it.

Happy, couldn’t agree more about where do you stop, and I agree about the prawn sarnie brigade but unfortunately that’s the way the game seems to be going to make a quick buck. Aren’t past players part of a clubs heritage ? I agree that you might end up with a funny shaped stadium if you named stands after everyone !! I think Bully probably just deserves the honour of a stand named after him. He was something of a Messiah for us in our darkest days and he did rescue England on a couple of occasions - but again it’s down to the individual. Unfortunately I have to get some work done now !! Wbaforever sorry I missed your comment. I agree that the content of the pretty and ugly players was quite amusing but it did lead to the peurile (love that word !!) nonsense that followed. Yeah I would also feel like decking someone who came out with abuse like that or returning the compliment at the very least but as soon as you do that you’re no better - and I’m not trying to provoke either - sometimes it’s harder to turn the other cheek (bl**dy h*ll hark at me I’ll be in the pulpit on Sunday at this rate !!) Make the foulmouths think twice. If they don’t get a response they’ll go away (hopefully) Good to talk to you and look forward to chatting in the future.

I am ok with naming a stand etc after a great player from the past - but when they are still alive it seems odd - I love the Astle gates and think the Billy Wright / Stan Cullis stands are a fitting tribute / monument - but Bully is about my age and it just seems weird.

The reason i havent posted on here today people is because i am Jarrod Hill. Yes i wrote the article above!!!
I chose to write about something that has been playing on my mind since George Best died, i think of Bomber Brown and hope we can honour him in a way he deserves, while still alive to join in the celebration of his career.
Oh and Happy Baggie, i wish i was 14 again.
The E+S pay reporters to write stuff about the games, i thought i would write about something different, my wife keeps telling me variety is the spice of life!!!!
Anyway i am now going to the Vine and then to the match, just for you HB i will keep the next article purely football.

just read the comments bout the re naming of the stands and have to say that as long as it remains being called the hawthorns i aint that interested in what the names of the stands are.i think calling stands after your legends is fine but what do you do when the next one comes along?.start naming the floodlights?.in the black country we call our grounds properley and we’ll leave the stands,ground naming to the sell out boys.

Rowley 46, Bomber Brown played with the Albion for nearly 20 years, finishing in the early 80’s and I believe he broke all the scoring records at that time for the club. Happy (45) even us wolves fans recognise a good player !!
