Villa flier Gabriel Agbonlahor insists he won’t be a one-season wonder.
Agbonlahor is set to face favourite opponents Everton on Sunday looking to add to his first goal of the season against Chelsea last time out at Villa Park.
The 20-year-old was Villa’s 10-goal top scorer last season and an ever-present in his first campaign, winning England under-21 honours.
Agbonlahor scored on his debut against the Toffees in March 2006 and Villa’s equaliser against David Moyes’s side last April.
Last season’s exploits have heaped expectations on the youngster’s shoulders, but he’s looking to Sunday’s fixture to prove to any critics he’s no flash in the pan.
“There will definitely be expectations, because people don’t want me to be a one-season wonder,” he said.
“Steven Davis had a great season when he first came in the team, and he started last season really well, so you can’t really say he was a one-season wonder.
“I’ll keep my head down, stay focused and keep working hard, and hopefully it will be the same as last season.”
Manager Martin O’Neill said: “There’s always talk of ‘one-season wonder’.
“But Gabby is continuing to develop and he’s not the sort to sit back and think he’s made it. He’s much better than 12 months ago.
“He can improve on his finishing, but couldn’t we all?
“He must set himself goalscoring targets and work hard to reach them.”
Agbonlahor added: “You don’t want to go backwards. I want to try to continue where I left off, stay in the team, keep scoring and hopefully have a similar season again.”
