Hundreds of modern apartments could breathe new life into Dudley town centre by replacing disused shops and offices under a revival scheme.
A plan rubber-stamped this week for 10 new flats in the High Street could signal a flood of investment in a new-look town centre.
Councillor Tim Wright, who lives in the centre, said he expected the five one bedroom and five two bedroom flats above a tanning studio and employment agency to be a sign of things to come.
“It will breathe new life into the town,” he said.
“After years of decline in Dudley, it is nice to see something beginning to redress the balance. Dudley has such a proud history as a medieval town and I’m sure that is something that will appeal to more developers and residents alike.
“Part of the centre is covered by legislation as a conservation area, but that just goes to show its historical value.
“I live in the town centre and I’m sure this will be the first of many developments. The type of homes we’re talking about will often appeal to first time buyers who want contemporary living. It’s better than empty offices and shops becoming derelict.”
