Striker Martin Butler today told his Walsall team-mates to get ‘back to basics’ in a bid to turn around their dismal start to the season.
The experienced forward admitted that Saddlers’ ‘terrible’ start to the season has blown away the euphoria from last year’s League Two championship triumph.
And he urged the players to get back to the solid defensive principles of last season in an effort to bounce back from their run of five straight defeats.
“We built a great foundation last season and if you keep clean sheets you’re going to win matches,” said Butler.
“We’ve got players at the club that we think are capable of creating and scoring goals.
“But we’ve got to get back down to basics and keeping clean sheets because if you don’t keep clean sheets you’re not going to win anything.
“We’ve had a terrible start the season and we’re the only ones that can turn it around.
“All of the old cliches will come out but it’s time for backs to the walls and all-out battling. Everybody needs to do as much as they can to turn things around. The only way you get through it is by hard work.
“At the moment we’re just not gelling as a team and things aren’t going our way but when you give away goals like we did at Bournemouth it’s game over.
“We came off the euphoria of a fantastic season when we were crowned champions.
“We have to make sure we’re doing everything we can to not to lose matches.”

in reply to tony, how can he say that last season clean sheets never happened? all REAL saddlers fans would realise that last season was a record breaking season for clean sheets? We should all shut up moaning and back the players we have!

I think that Butlers comments may be slightly wrong, you see its not enough to keep clean sheets to win games, you need to actually score yourself, oops thats were we are going wrong we forgot that bit!!!
We need a good confidence building result to kick start us and hopefully that’ll be Saturday
