Staffs Clubs latest

wickets.jpgBloxwich captain Martin Wootton has warned his side their title dreams will be over if they don’t come out on top in Saturday’s Staffs Clubs match of the day.

Fourth placed Bloxwich entertain second placed Wednesbury, with both sides potentially only a win away from overhauling leaders Lichfield.

After another weekend programme wrecked by rain, the city side lead Wednesbury and Beacon by 13 points with four games remaining, with Bloxwich a further five points behind.

And with Lichfield starting as firm favourites to beat struggling Highcroft and Great Barr Unity at home, Wotton believes it could be win or bust for one of the challengers.

“At the moment we’re just about still in the title race,” said Wootton, who will go into the weekend without Tom Revitt.

“I think a lot depends on this weekend’s result.

“Whoever comes out on top between us and Wednesbury will still be chasing, while whoever doesn’t will have to consolidate their position.

“It’s a big game for both of us - weather permitting.

“Last weekend was frustrating as we were playing the bottom of the league team, Whittington, who we would have fancied our chances against and all we could do was sit and watch the rain fall.

“Now we need to push on and try and get a good result and then make our minds up if we can still win it.

“We’ve beaten Lichfield and Beacon this season so there’s no reason why we can’t beat Wednesbury.”

• Lichfield captain Adam Braddock is delighted to be in pole position as the title race threatens to go to the wire.

But he admits his team don’t want to win the league sitting in the pavilion.

“It’s good to be ahead at the moment, but we’ve got to keep winning now until the end of the season,” said Braddock.

“I can’t remember as many games being called off as we’ve had this season and we would much prefer to be out there playing rather than sit and watch the rain fall.

“At the moment I think there’s still four or five teams in with a chance of winning the title and it could go right down to the wire.”

• But seventh placed Brewood aren’t ruling out their chances of a late title challenge after being the only home side to beat the weather and collect a winning draw from their clash with Milford Hall.

In a reduced overs clash, Will Marsh claimed 5-55 as Milford Hall made 138-8 from their 35 overs.

That left Brewood with only 26 overs to bat, with an unbeaten 55 from Shaun Guest steering them to 128-6.

“We feel we have been playing well for a while but I haven’t been able to win a toss,” said Guest.

“When you add together wins and winning draws, we’ve had nine positive results which is more than anyone else in the league.

“In the last couple of weeks it’s started to happen for us and with the way the league is with four games to go you never know what might happen with four wins.”
