Hednesford boss Phil Starbuck is confident his new-look side have the experience to prevent a repeat of the fade out that wrecked their promotion dream.
The Pitmen looked well placed for a sustained challenge after leading the Unibond Premier division at Christmas, only for a run of two wins in the last 16 games to condemn them to a finish outside the play-offs.
Starbuck has dramatically revamped his squad over the summer, recruiting 12 new players and allowing 10 to move on.
And after ending pre-season with an encouraging 2-0 win over Welsh Premier division side Total Network Solutions, the Keys Park chief believes his side can improve on last season.
“Pre-season has gone very well,” said Starbuck. “We have progressed from last season, and that for me is the key.
“We set a firm foundation last year and we’re trying to build on that this season.
“We’ve brought quality players into the squad and we’re now starting to play the type of football I want to play.
“Rome wasn’t built in a day and you need to get a foundation in place for the club both on and off the pitch.
“We did that last year and we’ll continue to build on it.
“I’m happy with the way we’ve played in pre-season. We’re playing some entertaining football and now it’s a case of continuing that into the season.
“We’ve brought players in who have got good experience so I don’t expect them to freeze and suffer from anxiety.
“With the way the boys have been playing and the good team spirit, I’m confident we’re ready for the start of the season.”
Starbuck insists he cannot guarantee a successful season at Keys Park - but insists no stone will be left unturned in an attempt to achieve it.
“Everybody’s aim at the start of the season is to win their league and win every game,” said Starbuck.
“But in reality that’s not going to happen. There are going to be hurdles and challenges along the way and it’s how you cope with them that’s important.
“I don’t know how the season is going to go because I can’t predict the future.
“But I can promise we will be working hard, playing some entertaining football and I know the lads will be giving it everything they have got.”
