Wulfs settle for share of spoils

afcwulfs.jpgWulfs’ first ever game in the West Midlands (Regional) League Premier Division saw them travel to one of the pre season title favourites Bridgnorth Town.

Bridgnorth had the luxury of playing down the slope in the first half and caused early problems from dead ball situations.

In the 4th minute Wayne Lawley’s miscued shot forced a corner from which the same player climbed highest to head just over the bar.

Three minutes later another well delivered corner saw Zak Jackson climb well but his header was collected comfortably by keeper Danny Tipton.

Wulfs’ first attack of the game, in the 12th minute, could, and should, have resulted in a penalty.

An excellent ball released Robbie Hubball down the left and he delivered a first time cross towards the onrushing Steve Rich.

Goalkeeper Steve Jones expected him to hit a first time shot but Rich allowed the ball to run across his body and the keepers momentum sent him crashing into the strikers legs.

The referee’s view was obscured and his assistant failed to help him out despite admitting he thought it was a penalty.

Wulfs defence were coping admirably with the Bridgnorth front line but were finding it difficult to create anything themselves.

The only real chances Wulfs created were a high ball into the area which the keeper spilt to the feet of Steve Rich but he was challenged just as he was about to shoot for goal, and a far post header from the same player from a Stewart Mason cross which flew straight at the keeper.

The game seemed destined to go into the break level until Bridgnorth took the lead ten seconds into injury time.

A Wulfs free kick was collected by keeper Steve Jones and his quick clearance allowed Wayne Lawley to chase to the corner of the area and strike a superb low shot across the keeper and into the far corner of the net.

Despite the setback, Wulfs almost hit back immediately from the restart when James Skedgel carried the ball forward with purpose, playing a couple of one-two’s along the way before lifting the ball over the keeper but, unfortunately, also over the crossbar.

The second half, with the slope now in their favour, saw Wulfs apply a more attacking approach and this brought them a deserved equaliser in the 67th minute.

Chip Southern contested a cross from the left and appeared to be bundled over but as players stood either appealing or pleading innocence, Myles Fenn followed up to ram the loose ball into the bottom corner of the net.

Wulfs were well in control of the game now but struggled to create any chances of note.

Bridgnorth still looked capable on the break and Mark Tipton was forced to make an excellent last ditch tackle as Gareth Horler was about to get a shot away and then George Williams hooked a shot wide from the resulting corner.

Wulfs chance to take all three points came six minutes from time when a throw from the left was chested down by substitute Ian Perry into the path of Andy Mitchell but his shot from the edge of the area flew wide of the post.

In the end both teams had to settle for a point which was probably the correct outcome from a game of very few chances.
