Controversial plans to wipe out three entire streets from a Bilston estate have been scrapped – now leaving just over a dozen homes facing the bulldozer, delighted campaigners told today.
More than 100 homes on the Lunt Estate would have disappeared under Wolverhampton City Council’s original regeneration hopes. People living in Boswell Road, Addison Place and Chantrey Crescent have faced nearly 18 months of waiting to discover if their homes would be demolished.
But it now appears only 13 homes are now set to bite the dust and the affected residents will be rehoused.
Millions of pounds are also then expected to be spent on sprucing up the remaining rundown houses on the estate.
Ann Nightingale, who has been spearheading the campaign against the plans, said residents were “over the moon” with the result.
“We have worked really hard for this and I am happy that we have been able to put across the way we wanted it done,” she said. “It is good to know the council has listened to what we have been saying.
“We’ve negotiated with the council as we live here, we know the problems. I have seen the new plans and it includes demolishing 13 homes and then the land would be sold, probably to a housing developer. The other homes will have money spent on refurbishing them inside and outside.”
Hailing the plans as “out of this world”, she added: “They seem to have spent a lot of time looking at what we want. There are still a few people left upset because they are going to have to pack up and move, but they have been assured they will get priority in the new houses.”
Tim Clark, spokesman for Wolverhampton City Council, could not confirm details of the new plans.
He said: “A report is going to the cabinet on September 25 where decisions will be taken about this area of The Lunt estate.”
