Mullen targets improvement

Stourport Swifts boss Phil Mullen today backed his new-look side to end two season of misery at Walshes Meadow.

For the second season running Swifts achieved a great escape when - despite finishing second from bottom - they were spared relegation only by a re-organisation of the league.

Under Roy Rencher the previous year they had escaped the drop on the last day of the campaign.

Now Mullen has targeted a big improvement after two poor seasons in the Southern League, and believes they have a squad capable of making an impact.

The Walshes Meadow side have retained the majority of last season’s squad and bolstered it with five new faces - including midfielder Richie Fields, forward Alex Lavery, centre-back Adam Harris, full-back Adam Smith and former Sutton striker Craig Marshall.

Mullen is also hopeful of adding to the squad before the campaign kicks off on August 18.

“I am confident that we’re going to have a better season than the last one. There is a feeling of optimism around the place,” he declared.

“We’re feeling good about the signings we’ve made and I’d like to think we have more of a chance this season.”

Mullen reckons that Swifts deserved better than they got in the last couple of months of the season.

“I felt that over the last six to eight games we deserved a bit more than we got.

“But we have got to move on from that and start to look forward,” he said.

Mullen’s men have enjoyed a decent pre-season and he hopes that will transfer into the next campaign, which he hopes will signal a chage in fortunes.

“Pre-season hasn’t been too bad. We have played Bromsgrove, Halesowen and Redditch and looked pretty good in those games,” he said.

“We have done OK and now we’re just looking to push on next season.”
