Weekly bin collections face axe

litter.jpgWeekly bin collections in Wolverhampton may be scrapped in favour of fortnightly rounds in 2010 after a review of the service, it has been revealed.

On its website the council admits it “will review the current policy to provide a weekly collection of residual waste as part of the fundamental review in 2010″.

But bosses have promised that no changes to weekly collections will happen before that date. A city-wide consultation with residents is due to start on Monday to plan for the next 20 years.

European Union legislation insists that the council almost doubles the amount of waste it recycles by 2009.Bosses plan to increase the amount of garden waste and recycling collected from homes by adding more collections and giving people bigger recycling bins.

They also plan to get residents involved by organising community events for people to bring their cardboard, plastic bottles, metal, textiles and wood which are not included in recycling rounds.

Wolverhampton City Council spokesman Felicity Roberts said: “Wolverhampton City Council and its waste and recycling service partner Enterprise Managed Services Limited positively welcome comments on this.”

The fact that they are even considering this reduction in service, and believe me it is a reduction no matter what they tell you, is just one more reason I’m glad I emigrated!

Just found the document mentioning this on the council’s website. It can be found at: http://www.wolverhampton.gov.uk/environment/rubbish_waste_recycling/minimisation/strategy.htm

It says on page 40 of the strategy:

Strategy Statement Number 19 – The Council will review the current
policy to provide a weekly collection of residual waste as part of the fundamental review in 2010. In reviewing the policy consideration will be given to the maintenance of high levels of customer satisfaction with the waste collection and recycling service.

Simple: collect & recycle plastic locally. Then we’ll meet our targets and not need to resort to fortnightly collections.

I’ve had fortnightly collections of each type of rubbish for over ten years now, with NO problems whatsoever. I throw out very little non-recyclable rubbish and no waste food. Many people have been doing the same for many years with no problems. It’s only the recent unfavourable publicity from careless folk who are new to this system and can’t recycle properly that have made matters seem much worse than they actually are. Don’t forget, you’ll still see the binmen weekly.

Don’t go down this road Wolverhampton. We have this style of collection in Telford. This morning I took a photo of the couple of hundred maggots at the bottom on my wheelie bin (I cleaned it out four days ago) and sent it to my councillor to pass on to the powers that be. Trouble is they’re all on holiday! I’m all for recycling but twice weekly collections for domestice food waste at this time of year not only creates an appauling smell and unlimited flies, but it is a health hazard to us all.
