Firefighters spent 40 minutes cutting a shop assistant free from a till at Swedish furniture giant Ikea’s Wednesbury store.
They were called out to the Axletree Way complex last night to reports of a staff member with his finger stuck in one of the store’s 20-plus tills.
Acting Watch Commander Darren Kendall, of Wednesbury Fire Station, said that the design of the tills included a small aperture which was the source of the 20-year-old staff member’s woes.
“We had a gentleman with his finger stuck in the removable drawer of a cash register,” he said.
“It was his middle finger that was stuck, and while his colleagues had tried using butter to get it out, the finger was swelling and something needed to be done.”
Mr Kendall said that his crew spent more than half an hour cutting the man free from the till drawer after they received an emergency call just after 8.30pm.
“The man was largely uninjured, apart from the swelling, but we had an ambulance on standby just in case,” he added.
Firecrews said that there was no reason for the unlucky worker to be embarrassed about having his finger caught inside the till.
