New train stations will be built across Walsall while others could be reopened as part of ambitious plans to improve transport links in the borough.
Residents are now being urged to give their views on how to shape the future of WalsallÕs rail network. Walsall Council is running a major consultation and is asking peopleÕs opinions on plans to push ahead for stations in Streetly, Willenhall and Aldridge.
Centro and Govia are being asked to consider a Willenhall station as a ÒpriorityÓ while Streetly would be re-opened. The Aldridge line, currently only used for freight and last used as a passenger line in 1965, would be reopened for commuters. Gary Clarke, Walsall councillor and chairman of the West Midlands Passenger Transport Association, said he was delighted with the progress.
He added: “This is something I have had on the agenda since I was transport cabinet member in 1998, and as far as I am concerned this is positive and would cut down on the congestion in the area. ÒCentro is aware of what we want in Walsall and we are in discussion with Govia.
The rail lines are there and we should be using them. Of course, some of the lines won’t be able to be re-opened because they are too old,” he said.
“Centro and Govia both understand what we want and I will not stop until we have these new stations and some of lines are reopened. We have got use the railways and I am very positive. I hope as many people and businesses read this report and comment on it.”
It is revealed in the report, the Walsall Rail Service and Facilities Improvement Plan, that Centro already owns land for a station in Aldridge and that it has been given planning permission to build one, including provision for a park and ride service in Anchor Meadow.
Walsall Train Station, which attracts 942,000 visitors a year, would also be given a boost as part of the plans with a new entrance and extra platform. Bloxwich Station would be moved 250 metres closer to the centre which would provide facilities for 100 car park spaces, ticket office and pick-up area. Details on www.walsall.gov.uk.

I think its about time Willenhall had a railway station again. everything is there for it to be done the railway line that runs under rosehill bridge is perfect and the sight of the old mr b’s nightclub is perfect for a train station. for a long time the people of willenhall have replied upon buses to get out of town, with the new train station it’l put willenhall on the map and maybe open it up to more business and investment moving in. I have a feeling this is probably just another story, iv heard about it for years now but it jus never seems to happen.

Whatever happened to the plans to reopen the Dudley-Wednesbury-Walsall line?
Whether as a tram or as a train this really ought to be brought back to life if we are serious about regenerting public transport.
