New boy ready for battle

wd182077967-wms-wolves-sla.jpgMick McCarthy today pinpointed Stephen Elliott’s “hunger” as the deciding factor in the £1.1m deal that has taken the Republic of Ireland striker to Molineux.

The 23-year-old was set to join the Wolves party today, but had not arrived in time for training at their County Dublin base this morning.

He has signed a three-year deal – and could make a quickfire debut in tonight’s friendly with Bray Wanderers.

The fee is undisclosed, but it is understood that McCarthy has spent over £1m to be reunited with the forward he signed for Sunderland.

“The Elliott deal is done. He’ll hopefully be with us today and if everything is passed in time we’ll have him out with us against Bray tonight,” McCarthy said today.

“He’s a great lad who will fit in very well with the squad. He is a good character who is easy to get on with. He’s a hard worker too, and we want plenty of those.

“He’s hungry as well because he missed a few games last season through injury. He seems to be right back at it now so I’m obviously delighted to have signed him.

Elliott will fight it out with Jay Bothroyd, Andy Keogh, Stephen Ward and Freddy Eastwood for the two striker berths next season. The Molineux chief believes he is getting a proven goalscorer.

“There are goals in Stephen. He’s been in two teams that have won the Championship as well. If you look at his contribution it is clear that he played a major part in both of those teams as well.

“He played 36 games for my Sunderland team and 21 last season even though he was injured. He’s a very, very good player and he’s still only 24 – so I see it as a really good signing.”

Elliott is best remembered by Wolves fans for three goals he scored against them in the 2004/5 season.

“He has a happy knack of scoring and that is something Wolves fans probably know. He scored three when I was manager of Sunderland and one last year – even though it was deflected,” he said.

frankly, do we need another striker? i mean, im aware elliot was prolific under MM at sunderland, however, carl cort was prolific at wimbledon once. and elliot has got a bit of a history of injuries.
this also tells me MM no longer rates either Ward or Bothroyd, as surly five frontmen are not needed?

This could be a very good move. Imagine we get a long term injury to one of our front men and then possibly a niggle for someone else. Without this signing that’d leave us down to two with no one on the bench except franki or johnson (if still at wolves) You never know a when injuries will crop up but at least this means we’ll always have fire power

Good strikers are hard to find, just look at the teams scrambling for them in the Championship including them lot down the road.

Look at how Brum benefited last year from having competition for places upfront last season: Bendtener, Forrsell, Vine, Cole, Jerome, D.J. Campbell and McSheffrey, 7 strikers!

His goal scoring record is largely down to injuries and sub appearences and once he’s 100% we’ll have signed a very good striker for relatively cheap in the current market.

Jay Bothroyd and Stephen Ward still have there part to play this season no doubt about it.

Why question MM ? Of course he knows what he is doing !! If MM was desperate to sign another defender we would have had a new left back or central defender in by now !! He is obviously going to look to a Premiership loan to fill one of these positions along with giving another youngster (mulgrew / collins) their chance ! Wolves fans be patient and stop the speculation (not helped by E & S !!) We have a quality (young / hungry) squad eager to play If we didn’t need another striker MM wouldn’t sign one !!!! look to Ward going out on loan and stop questioning the signings everytime one happens (apart from eastwood!!) For the first time in 15 years a manager has the right idea at wolves so roll on the new season !!! look at the state of hawthorns town down the road who cant keep their best players !!!!

We also need cover for defenders and for George in midfield. What happend if we get an injury to Henry and George goes off to Africans cup. We need quality cover to get us through the what ifs that so often happen. Quality for quality. The only way to go up!

I think that a 3-5-3 system could be on the cards. What with our midfield positions bursting with quality and up front now fully booked. MM might be looking to play either a defensive mid (henry) for the tough games or a AMC for when we need goals ( Keogh?) This might explain the decision not to spend on new defenders. With Collins making the step up we already have 5 CB not including breen! plenty for the one spot if it comes to that and still enough to cover a 442. Leave the moaning and pressure out and be happy with what we’ve got. Moaning on message boards won’t hurry MM up. If we need a cb Jez will get the one we want. If not then MM will obvious have another plan.

Stay in Florida! I want Premiership soccer, we pay a fortune for tickets, have players that half the time we haven’t heard of. Who gets ALL the money then? Moxey and his crew! Morgan might have a bit, but while he hears that we are content with staying in the championship, he will hang in there and not spend anything.
