Mick: I won’t break the bank

wd2112441wolves-v-wba-13-j.jpgMick McCarthy has pledged not to smash the Molineux wage cap as he steps up his summer recruitment drive.

Wolves are set to annonunce their second deal of the close season this week when Darren Ward completes a £500,000 transfer from Crystal Palace – and McCarthy today promised more signings before the Championship campaign kicks off on August 11.

Billy Sharp will travel to Molineux for talks this week, and Freddy Eastwood is another confirmed target.

But McCarthy insists he will not break the unofficial Wolves wage cap for anyone.

Wage parity was hailed as a major reason for the fierce team spirit last season – and McCarthy sees no reason to “upset the applecart” by offering big money to potential signings.

“We have to be conscious of what we had last season. Both myself, Jez and Steve Morgan have always said we don’t want to change the culture at the club,” he said.

“Of course if we want to do better than we did last season and take that next step then we have to sign some players – but we have to do it within reason. We can’t go paying ridiculous amounts – it just won’t happen.”

McCarthy is adamant about maintaining the ethic that endeared the team to the fans last season.

“There was a good chemistry in the squad and we don’t want people to come in and upset the apple cart.

“They all worked hard and that is the main issue – if they all put a shift in and they see the bloke next to them doing it then they will tolerate most things. Anyone who comes inhas to earn the right to play.”

The coaching staff have been planning their summer transfer swoops for months – and the boss hopes their hard work will pay off.

“Whenever you are taking anyone on you take everything into consideration. You look at where they have been, what they have done, the club they have been at and see whether you think it will work out.

“There are a lot of determining factors to who you can get – and how much they want to be paid is one of them.”

I wish the E&S would explain why Freddy Eastwood has changed from “a signing within days” (two weeks ago) to “another confirmed target” now.

Right on, Funkster, we don’t want any internal bitching! I live in Japan, and have just taken mandatory retirement at 70 so I’ve got time on my hands. I’ll play for nothing too. I’ll pay my own air fare and pop over, Mick!

    No more transfer rumours then.

Anybody heard about Currie from Ipswich being linked to us?

Why has it gone so quiet on the Eastwood front?

Last week we were apparently on the verge of signing him.

I agree with Mick in trying to keep a cap on wages, but this might not inspire players to sign for us UNLESS they have a good bonus scheme in operation i.e Promotion = £20k etc

This ‘Wage Cap’ may actually stop players from coming in as we cannot meet their demands. If we got promoted this would surely have to change.
Good policy though, stops bickering, and fits in with the ‘Hungry Wolves’ of last year.
I congratulate everyone behind the scene for keeping sigining under wraps. Just hope we got a shock and actally pull off the signing of Eastwood & Sharp.

    UP THE WOLVES!!!

I’m sure MM will bring in talent that wants to play for the club and not just the wages. I’d rather trust in Mick to persuade players to join the Wolves revolution than waste money on overpaid underperformers who have no desire to put on a shirt come Saturday.
Regards Eastwood… don’t believe everything you read, especially not in the E & S! We should still try to sign Freddy, but not if the shrimpers try to fleece us. I suspect that they may not be so greedy if the interest in him cools a little. After all, he can walk for nothing next year if they price him out of the market now.

I dont agree, not until its a league rule, if the so called ‘wage cap’ is a lot lower than other championship clubs we will get poorer players, success in football means money, I dont care about wolves making a fat profit for fat directors. The season in the prem proves this, whatever happened to the wolves fans who cared about success and not bloomin’ finances.

Keith, paying loads of money out for players got us nowhere. This is a much better policy, keep it tight and we will prosper.

As Graham Taylor said, to be succesful you need good finances, good training facilites and good players. Wolves always lacked 2 of these.

Moxey is the difference, between stupid spending and keeping the Wolves in the right direction. We always come good in the end we just drive a hard bargain.

In just one season MM proved that his credentials and style of management is exactly what WWFC needed. The best positive that came out of last season was that the Board backed MM wholeheartedly in everything he did. We’ve turned the corner, so lets all back what’s going on at Molineux and enjoy the success that those decisions will bring.
