Mick McCarthy believes the lure of playing with former striker partner Andy Keogh could be a deciding factor in the chase for Scunthorpe hit man Billy Sharp.
The Wolves boss will hold talks with the striker this week after the club made a £1.5m bid – and McCarthy reckons reuniting their old Iron partnership will appeal to Sharp.
McCarthy has also hailed Crystal Palace defender Darren Ward as the 28-year-old nears a £500,000 Wolves switch.
“Billy Sharp has scored the goals in League One on a regular basis and we’ve got his playing partner here – everyone knows they’ve got a great record. So we have been interested to talk to him and I’m delighted we’ve got that permission.
“The fact that we’ve got Andy Keogh here could be the deciding factor in terms of him wanting to play. I know the thought of having the opportunity to play with him again appeals to Billy. And he’s got a proven track record.”
The club can expect a decision from Sharp by the end of the week, by which time they are almost certain to have unveiled Eagles defender Ward as their second summer signing. McCarthy believes they will be getting a player of proven pedigree if he completes his move.
“He’s got a very good reputation and is somebody who I know from being involved in the Championship for as long as I have. I’ve certainly got an interest in Darren. We’ve been tracking him for a long time,” he said.
Wolves are facing competition from Sheffield Wednesday and Norwich in the race to sign Sharp – and are also battling with the Canaries on the Freddy Eastwood front.
“There are not a lot of players out there who fit the category of having the proven track record and being available at the right price, so it is no surprise that other clubs are in for the players we’re looking at,” McCarthy admitted.
“You look at Freddy (Eastwood) – there are lots of clubs who’d like to take him as well. Everyone wants goalscorers.”
So far the club have had no offers for transfer-listed quartet Jamie Clapham, Denes Rosa, Jemal Johnson and Tomasz Frankowski.

we need billy to put the last piece of jigsaw in our front line

We can use Jamie Clapham, Denes Rosa, Jemal Johnson and Tomasz Frankowski as bait if need be. But I’m sure MMS knows this

Things are beginning to look a lot brighter, when Sharp sees what’s on offer at Molineux etc I’m sure he’ll sign; it’s no use Scunthorpe holding out for more money, because they will not want an unhappy player. Looks like Super Mick is very happy with the imminent signing of Ward - that’ll do for me!
Not a big surprise there are no takers for the transfer-listed four!
Billy, if you read these forums - you know it makes sense…!!
not surprised 1 bit about no takers for the 4 on the transfer list - although Rosa could be useful?

I would not be too dissapointed if we miss out on sharp and get eastwood. eastwood is a proven goal scorer at this level, but sharp is a bit of unknown at this level. but i think sharp will choose wolves above the other teams even without the keogh factor

Can we not mention jigsaw pieces please

I think the only reason why Sharpe hasnt signed for anyone yet, is because he’s holding out for us, our take over, and having the money to buy him.
Lets hope it goes through, readin between the lines, MM is hoping to get eastwood too.

I think by the end of next week we will have Freddie eastwood, billy sharp and darren ward wrapped up as wolves players then we will have a few suprises like quality prem youngsters on loan e.g denilson(arsenal), Scott Sinclair (Chelsea).

How low have we stooped if your all gettin excited about a striker from League 1. WE ARE WOLVES, AND WE ARE LOADED. Raise the bar, Moxley. Pallis rejects are not good enuff for us!
lets not forget, wolves want both eastwood and sharp…
Report abuse
visage - He isnt a league 1 player…………..they have been promoted to the same league as he scored so many goals.
We are excited because he has the potential to make the step up like Leroy Lita and Zamorra did and become the striker we have been missing since Bully. 20 plus goals a season is what we need from him and indeed 15 or more from his strike partner, ideally we want the front 2 bagging 50 goals between them. Cough cough, Eastwood!!
Im Not to bothered if we dont get eastwood as long as we get sharp. i mean Keogh & Sharp what a pratnership!
IN MICK WE TRUST!

Great news, Billy come on lad be a hero!
By the way I disagree with Merlin Mick, who quite rightfully is having a go at that Pratt Sven, there IS A LOT of transfer goings on at the Hawthorns! There is a mass exodus out! They will be lucky to make the top half of the table next season if they lose all the players who want out.
Sven, this our time so behave and go………………………

Our very own Kightley & Keogh came from where exactly? Lower league players have been over looked far too often in the past and where did it get us signing so-called Big Names?
Just take a look down the road and see what happened last season with tescos bunch of over achievers! Yeah they got to the Play Off Final - But in ALL Boggie fans hearts - they wished, longed for and knew that anything less than promotion via 1st, 2nd spots or even the last chance saloon Play Off Final is not good enough with a squad of over paid Big time Charlies - We as fans of the club PREFER the route that Merlin is taking - maybe when we’re promoted we can then bring in the right mix of experienced Prem players to anchor the young cubs - but MM is doing just fine and Wolves are on the UP!!!
Our club has improved 100% since Goddles departure - lets not go backwards!!!
Up the Wolves!!!

It has been reported on radio Sheffield that Sharpe is signing for them

Sheffield United are set to re-sign Scunthorpe striker Billy Sharp for £2m - having sold him to the Iron for £100,000 two years ago.
“We’re just waiting to finalise everything,” Blades chairman Terry Robinson told BBC Radio Sheffield.

if eastwoods so good, & he’s scord so many goals, why has his team (southend) been religated???? all we need is sharp!!! sharp plus keogh = wolves 10 - 0 baggies
lol

I think you will all be disapointed becasue Billy Sharp is just about to sign for Sheffield United for £2M plus two players coming the other way. If you actually did your homework about Billy Sharp you would know he would only leave us to to to Sheffield United as it is his home town club. He has been a very good player for us and although I am dissapointed he is going I wish him all the best. Wolves might be a big club but sometimes a player comes along who just wants to play football for his home town team that has always been Billy Sharp’s dream.

Billy Sharp has signed for the blades!

if he is so good and got soooo much potential why did Sheff Utd let him go in the first place… he will strugglr in this league and would rather have Hulse and Stead any day of the week…
And Happy_Baggie who have your lot signed??????????

NOTHING IS OFFICIAL YET, SO ALL U CAN ALL CALL WAT YA WANT BUT WE WONT RULE ANYTHING OUT, HE MIGHT EVEN SIGN FOR BAGGIES (WELL ALMOST ANYTHIN IS POSSIBLE JUS NOT THIS)

Sharp for 2 million is a risk that I for one down think was worth making. Not convinced on Eastwood but think as we lost out on Sharp need to get him but again not for 2 million.Ideally I would wait for Healey but dont think we can wait for him. Lafferty could be back on agenda as Burnley finally got their Albanian striker.Knowing super MM he will probably shock us all with a signing that we have never herd of.
Well if you look on Scunnys web site, he hasn’t signed and no bid has been lodged by Sheff Utd.
Still time to get him. go get him MM/JM
Report abuse
The signing of a new contract for Sheffield has not been confirmed and if you check the Scunthorpe web site they say just as much. In fact they fervently deny that any such action has been either completed neither have they received an offer from Sheffield for Billy. Let’s see what develops Friday!!!!!!
