Hooligans target pubs

police11.jpgYobs smashed the windows of pubs in a Black Country town after Albion’s victory over Wolves in last night’s crunch play-off match.

Around 30 thugs were involved in smashing the windows of The George pub in Upper High Street, Wednesbury, just after 9.30pm.

The group, armed with hockey sticks and poles, also tried to kick the doors down of the pub, where around 80 Albion and Wolves fans watched the game.

They had earlier smashed the windows of the nearby Lamp and The Woden.

Karen Johnson, licensee at The George, said: “The atmosphere was really intimidating.”

Two men, aged 17 and 19, were arrested.

Elsewhere, six people were arrested for attempting to get into the Hawthorns while drunk, and three people were ejected from the ground during the match.

Will Harper, spokesman for West Midlands Police said: “Fans were mostly well behaved. Police were reasonably pleased with the way the game went.”

Meanwhile, Albion’s Wembley hotline was today overloaded with calls.
