Accident causes gridlock

The HGV, which was on its way to a DIY shop, tipped over on the Oxford Street roundabout on the Black Country Route in Bilston at around 2.40pm yesterday.

A passer-by stopped to help the driver, who was not hurt, out of his cab. Traffic backed up around the scene of the accident while the emergency services tried to clear the wreckage.

Fire crews from Bilston and Tettenhall attended and West Midlands Fire Service’s major rescue unit was also scrambled but was not required. Police sealed off one lane of traffic so the lorry could be removed. It was eventually cleared away at about 5pm.

In a separate accident, a woman in her 20s was taken to hospital after two cars collided in Perton Road, Tettenhall. A Golf and a small van crashed in Perton Road at around 3.30pm.

Paramedics treated passengers at the scene but the woman, who had a gash on her head, required more treatment at hospital.
