Glenn back home to start tour

You can take the rock star out of the Midlands, but you can’t take the Midlands out of the rock star.

So it was fitting that Cannock-born Glenn Hughes jetted in from LA to kick off his latest tour at JBs in Dudley on Saturday night.

The former Deep Purple and Trapeze bassist and singer proved to be on top form as he led his all-new band through a near two-hour show, kicking off with Valiant Denial from his excellent new album Songs For The Divine.

Although the sound suffered to start with, it soon settled down and the JBs crowd lapped up an electric mix of hard rock, funk and soul, which took in plenty off the new album plus the cream of his solo output, among them Soul Mover, In My Blood and Orion.

The were three Deep Purple songs for the die-hards, including a simply gorgeous You Keep On Movin’, and covers of Nights In White Satin and Whiter Shade Of Pale.

Hughes and his band looked relaxed, happy and delighted with the crowd reaction. New guitarist Jeff Kollman and drummer Mark Mondesir excelled in particular, and it was hard to believe this was the first live gig this band had ever performed together.

Before the gig, Glenn was at Molineux to see Wolves’ 2-2 draw with Sheffield Wednesday.

He is a huge Wolves fan and listens to every game from his home in Los Angeles where he has lived for the past 37 years. When he cannot get internet coverage his mother, who lives in Cannock, holds the phone to the radio commentary.

He was reunited at the Wolves game with old school friend John Hackney, who still lives in the area.
