One of the world’s biggest hotel chains is bidding to be part of Wolverhampton’s £176 million Interchange project, the Express & Star can reveal. Marriott wants to create a four-star hotel on the site.It would be built opposite the new railway station, set to become a landmark building linking all public transport in just six years time.
It has also emerged the new bus station could operate on a two-tier system where passengers descend from a swish boarding lounge to the new bus depot.
And it is planned that the historic Queen Building - currently the bus station entrance hall - will be the centrepiece of a public square which might house a trendy cafe bar or shops.
More details about the scheme were released by project manager Rob Mason of Liverpool-based developers Neptune Ltd.
Neptune has worked with Marriott on other projects and said the group was keen to open its first hotel in Wolverhampton.
He said: “Marriott has expressed an interest but we have not made a decision yet. We are very much open to offers from other operators.”
He said the aim of the scheme was to create a “spectacular” railway station that the city could be proud of and a new “office quarter” that would attract millions of pounds of investment.
He said: “This development will have buildings of the quality in Birmingham’s Brindleyplace.”
