The number of violent and dangerous sex offenders living in the West Midlands has rocketed because they are being released from prison to be treated in the community, it was revealed today.The region is now home to 716 so-called category two sex offenders - convicts who have been jailed for a year or more - which is an increase of 39 per cent on the previous year.
Figures reveal how 103 were returned to custody for breaching their licence which could involve anything from failing to comply with probation or curfews to contacting victims.
But the number of category three attackers, or those deemed to be beyond control by medication, has fallen from 21 to 16.
A report by the Multi Agency Protection Public Protection Arrangements revealed 147 of the region’s 1,925 registered sex offenders, including paedophiles and rapists, breached orders designed to protect the public. More than 100 have been put back behind bars for breaching their orders.
But the number of registered sex offenders has decreased by 10 per cent from 2,158 last year.
Wolverhampton is home to 88 registered sex offenders, while Wednesfield has 131 and Willenhall has 78.
