Gun husband gets six years

A Rugeley man who burst into his estranged wife’s home and pointed a gun to her head has been jailed for six years.Michael Osbourne, from Horsefair, wore a black balaclava and threatened his wife following a long-running domestic dispute, Wolverhampton Crown Court heard.

Hayley Osbourne, from Rugeley, had feared for her life when she was woken by the bed covers being yanked off her last February.

Osbourne, aged 34, had denied harassment and possessing a gun with intent to cause fear of violence when he appeared at Stafford Crown Court in June.

But he was convicted of both charges and transferred to Wolverhampton Crown Court for sentencing yesterday.

Osbourne’s marriage broke down after his wife discovered he had been having an affair with their lodger, whom he later moved in with.

Mr Gerald Bermingham, defending, said it was Osbourne’s first offence for 17 years.

Mr Bermingham said: “My client had a turbulent youth but over the years he has managed to turn himself around.”

Recorder Mr Nigel Baker QC said Osbourne’s former wife feared she was going to be shot.

The judge said: “You entered her bedroom while she slept wearing a mask and carrying a firearm, or imitation firearm.”

He said Osbourne had also breached a restraining order by entering her home.

“She was terrified and believed you were going to shoot her and you showed no remorse for your actions when arrested,” he said.

As well as the prison sentence, Osbourne was issued with a new restraining order and banned from contacting his wife for 10 years.
