There has been much buffing of crystal balls on sports desk after we launched our weekly video football predictions league. And the first weekend of action threw up some fascinating results for our sports reporters. Setting off like a steam train was our Chief Sports Writer and elder statesman Martin Swain who proved there is nothing to match a bit of experience by storming into a three point lead at the top of the table.
“Mystic” Swain as we now know him correctly predicted a 1-1 draw for Villa and 1-0 win for Wolves - giving him two maximum three-points hauls.
He bolstered his tally by predicting Walsall and Albion would emerge victorious from their assignments.
The best of the rest was Wolves man Mark Douglas who collected five points - largely due to his forecast of a 1-0 win for Wolves. Tim Nash sits in mid-table with four points.
But it was a pretty dreadful weekend for our two Steves - Madeley and Marshall who collected a meagre two points apiece.
Marshall had the ignomy of finishing the weekend in bottom place thanks to alphabetical order which places Madeley ahead.
But that should be scant consolation to our Saddlers reporter who gave a hint to exactly why he was so badly out of touch during today’s inquest into the weekend’s games.
In assessing Saturday’s games he referred to Walsall’s efforts against Colchester - a team sitting two divisions above the Saddlers - suggesting his mind must have been elsewhere when drawing up his first predictions list.
Marshall and Madeley are the early favourites to finish bottom of the table and pay the end-of-season forfeit.
And we are asking web users to suggest a suitable penalty for whoever ends up with the wooden spoon next May.
