Stefan Oakes returns to Walsall tomorrow on a mission to show Saddlers’ fans what they missed out on.
The Wycombe midfielder left Bescot after just one nightmare first team start but has since rebuilt his career with Notts County and now the Chairboys.
He said: “I didn’t really get a chance (at Walsall). I’m disappointed they didn’t see what I could do.
“I made one start, got sent off and we lost 6-1. It wasn’t the best of times! But I’m not bitter, football is like that.
“I wanted first team football but Vinny Samways was in my position at the time and he was superb, so I moved on to Notts County.”
Oakes, tipped as a potential Premiership player last week by Wycombe boss Paul Lambert, is delighted with his progress since leaving the West Midlands.
“Even at 28 I’m still learning and I’ve added to my game this season,” he said.
“As a team we’re back on track after losing three in four, but Walsall is massive for us.
“They’re top and have been setting the benchmark, but we’ll go above them if we win and there’s no reason why we can’t do that.”
Richard Money believes League Two’s finest two strikers will go head to head tomorrow.
The Saddlers boss has identified Bescot top-scorer Martin Butler and Wycombe hitman Tommy Mooney as the top two in the division.
“They are both very experienced and they both still have lots of quality,” he said.
“I had Tommy as a kid at Aston Villa. He was always a very talented player but we had so many strikers then that we had to release him.
“But he has gone on to make a terrific career for himself. Having Tommy Mooney and Martin Butler on the same pitch should be very interesting.”
