£20m leisure plan is delayed

Key public meetings called to let people have their say over multi-million pound leisure plans across Cannock Chase have been postponed.

They were due to be held at three venues across the district next week but have now been put off after vital documents about the proposed £20 million Chase Leisure Village were not received in time.

Cannock Chase District Council has not yet received a report outlining the results of a feasibility study which is due to be submitted by the council-appointed architects.

It means the authority would not be able to properly assess its options before the meetings and the controversial issue is set to be a key agenda item.

The decision has now been made to wait until the study can be fully assessed before the meetings are rearranged so residents could be given as much information as possible.

Cannock Chase Council leader Councillor Neil Stanley said: “This is such an important project for the people of this district that those taking their time to attend the meetings deserve to have the fullest picture possible about their options for future leisure facilities.

“We hope as many people as possible will be able to attend the meetings on the revised dates.”

The district council had set the Vision Into Reality meetings for October 17-19 and they would have been held at the Rugeley Rose theatre in Rugeley, Blake Valley Technology College in Hednesford and Chase Leisure Centre in Cannock.

New dates have not yet been announced but the meetings are expected to be at the same venues.

To create the Chase Leisure Village, the Tory/Liberal-run district council wants to sell land at Cannock Stadium.

The project would see the demolition of Chase Leisure Centre and redevelopment to include an Olympic-size swimming pool, sports hall, theatre and shops.
