Wolves goalscoring king Steve Bull has backed Mick McCarthy’s strikers to come good. McCarthy’s new generation have surpassed all expectations with their solid start to the season - but they are the third lowest scorers in the Championship with only eight goals.
Molineux legend Bully, who today runs the rule over Wolves options in front of goal, reckons Wolves need a settled front two.
The man who lit up Molineux in his 501 appearances would opt for two of Leon Clarke, Carl Cort and Jay Bothroyd in the front spots - with Jemal Johnson on the wing.
“Goalscoring has been a bit of a problem so far but its not for a lack of chances,” said Bull, pictured.
“I think part of it is that they might all be a bit similar, we maybe need someone who can come in and hold the ball up.
“What they really need is for a couple of them to hit form and establish a partnership. They have that in defence and midfield so we just need to discover a recognised front two now.”
Despite the trials of Wolves quartet of front men, Bully says he likes what he has seen from McCarthy’s new generation.
“Mick has them playing 100 per cent again. He’s a straightforward guy and they all seem to know where they should be playing and what is going on. I think everyone can see the difference from the last couple of seasons.”
Bully is currently recovering from keyhole surgery on the knee he injured during his testimonial game against Villa in July.
Here are his verdicts on the class of 2006:
JAY BOTHROYD:
I think he’s done well in the games I’ve seen and he’s got bags of talent. He’s your man for a 25 yard screamer but whether he’s a six-yard box poacher I don’t know. On paper he has everything - great feet and is big and awkward in the air.
LEON CLARKE:
He’s an old fashioned striker really. He’s big, strong and doesn’t get easily knocked off the ball. This is a big season for him and Mick rates him I think. He was good against Stoke. He’s certainly got the attributes to become a top striker.
CARL CORT:
I think he’s a good target man but he’s been hit and miss this season. I know he’s had a few injuries and that doesn’t help. Wolves could do with a big man of his calibre so it is a perfect situation for him if he can rediscover his form.
CRAIG DAVIES:
The first time I saw him I thought, ‘This lad is greased lightning’. He’s so fast. But it’s not happening for him in front of goal at the moment and thats probably down to a lack of matches. Because of his pace he’ll always be a dangerous option.
JEMAL JOHNSON:
He started so well with the two goals and he looks like he has an eye for a goal, but I think he needs to rediscover a bit of that goalscoring hunger he had when he first joined Wolves. I see him as a wide man and I’d play him there.
