Centro may halt Cornbow scheme

Transport giants Centro could throw a spanner in the works of a £30m revamp at Halesowen’s Cornbow Centre, it emerged today.

The firm has concerns about the effect on the nearby bus station.

It is one of four to have lodged objections against Compulsory Purchase Orders issued to make way for the shopping centre’s major redevelopment.

Councillors and campaigners today said they hoped the transport group would resolve its issues with Dudley Council to allow the scheme to go ahead.

Hayley Green and Cradley South Councillor Ken Turner said it was essential the matter was put to bed as soon as possible.

“I find it a little strange that Centro have lodged an objection,” he said.

“The refurbishment of Halesowen’s Cornbow Centre needs to take place as a matter of urgency.

“It’s very easy to lodge objections and appeals against these things and, equally, it is understandable that groups look after their own interests.

“But we must look at the benefits to the people of Halesowen and the small businesses located in the town centre.

“Centro must accept their responsibilities and negotiate a solution.”

The makeover is unlikely to be finished until at least summer 2008.
