Gobern welcomes rivals

lewisgobern.jpgWolves winger Lewis Gobern today welcomed Mick McCarthy’s hunt for a pair of Premiership wide men by declaring: “Competition will spur me on.”

McCarthy will shrug off the disappointment of being blocked from taking Newcastle’s Alan O’Brien to step up his chase to loan a wing duo after the international break.

The Wolves boss is hopeful of progress before Colchester visit Molineux a week today, but teenager Gobern, who has caught the eye with a string of sparkling displays in Terry Connor’s second string, insists he is not scared of the competition.

“I see it as a challenge if he brings wingers in - it will spur me on. I can see why he might do it, I think I’m the only dedicated winger at the club.

“If there is someone there who plays in your position it makes you work harder and I think in a succesful squad you need that competition. I definitely think it’d be a good thing and it just means I have to work that bit harder.”

McCarthy is an advocate of old fashioned wingers and has assured Gobern he is in his plans if he maintains his current performance levels.

“The manager has been quality, he’s been great to me and all the other young lads. He has already told me he likes wingers which is great for me and now I’ve got to prove to him that I can fill that role.

“He’s told me what I’m good at and that and hopfully I’ll get a chance.”

Gobern’s tireless performance in the friendly against Bristol City on Tuesday will no doubt have helped his cause, and he admits he sees the second string games as a perfect platform to stake his claim for a first team spot.

“I’ve done okay in these friendly games. The more I play, the fitter I become and the better I become. I’ve had four games now.”
