Plan for factory site approved

A £100 million regeneration scheme that could create thousands of jobs on the site of Cannock’s former Automotive Lighting factory has been given the thumbs up.Bob Evans, director of planning for Cannock’s leading developer Pritchard Holdings, presented the scheme for the former Bridgtown plant which closed in 2004.

He used a computerised video presentation to show councillors how one of the largest redevelopment schemes ever undertaken in Cannock will look.

The Walkmill Lane site would be transformed, with 198 houses comprising one and two-bedroomed apartments, and three, four and five-bedroomed houses.

There would also be a care home with 62 flats and a retirement village with 129 apartments, as well as two areas of open space. Under the scheme, five car showrooms would also be built.

Councillor Zaphne Stretton said: “My husband used to work at Automotive Lighting and I am pleased there is going to be housing on the development, but I am keen to know how many jobs will be created.”

Mr Evans admitted he could not say exactly how many jobs would be created.

The outline planning application was approved.
