In-form midfielder Seyi Olofinjana has selflessly moved to harness the blame for Wolves’ heavy defeat at Cardiff insisting: “I cost us the game.”
Never one to shirk his duties, the affable Nigerian has openly admitted that it was his mistake that led to Cardiffâs opener - a header by former Albion man Riccy Scimeca.
It’s a bold admission from Olofinjana, whose public acceptance of his error is not only testament to his character but also the spirit of Mick McCarthy’s new-look side.
Despite his blip, which allowed Scimeca a free header, Olofinjana was arguably Wolves’ best performer in game which saw them face an uphill struggle after Gary Breen’s controversial dismissal.
But despite Cardiff’s numerical advantage the 26-year-old believes Wolves could still have still grabbed a point had they not conceded before the break.
“Players will always get sent off - this is football,” he reasoned. “But if you look at the goals we conceded they were very poor.
“There is no excuse for some of our defending and we should have done better.
“I blame myself so much for the first goal as I completely lost my man.
“I allowed him a complete free header and that’s not good enough. Hopefully that won’t happen again.
“Personally I believe I cost us the game. Before that they weren’t playing any better than us. If you are in the wrong you are in the wrong, that’s the way I see it.”
The cultured midfielder believes the sending-off of defensive lynchpin Breen was the match’s defining moment. He added he was ‘disappointed’ with some of the referee’s decisions.
“Breenyâs dismissal was a massive blow for us. He is such an important player for us and we really missed him.
“Some of the referee’s decisions were disappointing.
“Breeny isn’t that sort of player and I don’t think he should have been sent off.”
