A Stafford golf club hopes to celebrate its centenary by expanding its course from nine to 18 holes.Stafford Castle Golf Club, formed in 1907, is also planning to have a new clubhouse built at its site in Newport Road.
The club will go from a members’ run club to one run by the company that is to carry out the work Luddington Investments Ltd if a planning application gets the go-ahead.
Luddington has submitted an application for extension and re-modelling of the existing course to make it a full 18-hole course.
The scheme, which has yet to be considered by Stafford Borough Council, also involves new car parking.
Barry Waltho, chairman of the club’s eight-strong development committee and a former club captain, said: “Stafford Castle Golf Club has been in discussion with Lord Stafford Estates with a view to extending to 18 holes for several years.
“This has resulted in a partnership between the estates and Luddington Investments to provide an 18-hole golf course and a new clubhouse on the land.
“The existing membership are fully supportive of this development which will provide a much-needed facility in the Stafford borough.
“At the same time it will also enhance the area around Stafford Castle and protect it from future development.
“It is our centenary year in 2007 and we hope to celebrate this by having the planning application approved and work commending on the course in that year.”
The club is holding an open day on Saturday, October 21, from 10am to 2pm.
Luddington Investments will be attending and will be available to discuss the proposed development.
Mr Waltho said any interested people would be welcome to attend.
Luddington Investments will be financing the scheme for which the costs have not yet been disclosed.
Mr Waltho said that the company would take over the club at the end of the development process and would run the facility.
The club is looking to increase membership in the build up to its centenary.
