The little boy was struck after walking in a nearby field with his father and several other children in Woodcross, Coseley, last night.

He was hit by a car, which failed to stop after the accident in Childs Avenue.

The boy was taken to Dudley’s Russells Hall Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A Renault believed to have been involved in the collision has been recovered.

A man last night went to Bilston police station before being taken to New Cross Hospital where he was arrested on suspicion of failing to stop after an accident.

The 42-year-old from Bilston was today helping police with their inquiries.

Police believe the boy was in a field in Childs Avenue with his father on the moments before the tragedy.

Sgt Paul Richards, of the road policing unit, said: “We don’t know if the father was in front or behind but he was with his dad.

“He’s gone into the road and been struck by this car which came from Woodcross Lane direction.”

Sgt Richards appealed for anyone in the Childs Avenue area between 5.30pm and 6.30pm to come forward.
