Hundreds of property owners in Bewdley today celebrated the completion of the town’s £11 million flood defence system designed to save their homes from the River Severn.Bewdley is the first in the country to be defended by the barriers, previously trialled abroad, and they are designed to preserve the beauty of the town.
Properties along the riverside have been hit by rising water over-topping the quayside 30 times during the past 100 years.
Today Climate Change and Environment Minister Ian Pearson, MP for Dudley South, joined the celebrations to unveil a plaque marking the end of work on the project.
