Fine threat on election forms

A quarter of residents could be hit with fines of up to £1,000 in Lichfield and Burntwood for failing to return forms allowing them to vote.

Lichfield District Council reissued a plea to remind people they must return forms as soon as possible.

Concern is growing as 25 per cent of district households have not yet returned forms to register details for the Register of Electors 2007.

All should now have had a form delivered and everyone born before November 30, 1989, must return their forms straight away.

If not the council will have to employ canvassers to visit those failing to submit information. They could be fined.

Councillor Louise Flowith, cabinet member for democratic and legal services, said: “If you have not registered your household’s details, please do so as soon as possible. Employing canvassers is an unnecessary cost for the council and council tax payers,” she said.

“Most people do not realise it is a legal requirement to register their details, and that they could be fined up to £1,000 if they fail to do so.

“We need you to confirm your details even if they have not changed, or if you have no intention of voting.”

She said people must be on the register to vote at district and parish elections on May 3, or for any other election, public poll or referendum which may be called.

Forms are pre-printed with information currently on the register. If there are no changes people should sign and date the form and post it back to the council in the envelope provided.

For those with a touchtone phone registration can be completed by calling 0800 197 8611.It can also be completed on line at www.registerbyinternet.com/lichfield

If you have misplaced or not yet received a form call electoral Services on 01543 308125. If changes or additions to details on the form are needed it must be completed and return by post.
