Booze made by inmates

Home-made hooch has been seized from inmates at a jail near Wolverhampton - after crafty criminals stored up fruit from a healthy eating week to make the brew.

Wardens at Featherstone Prison seized the booze after discovering prisoners had hidden leftover fruit to create the drink.

Governor Mike Bolton revealed that alcohol was one of a number of items which had been confiscated from the inmates over the past year.

He said: “Prisoners can be very imaginative and a lot of them are quite clever and quite creative individuals.

“There are always going to be one element of the prison population that will seek to take advantage of that and misuse the facilities that have been given to them.”

Among the goods seized from HMP Featherstone and Brinsford Young Offenders Institute over the past year include mobile phones, chargers and SIM cards.

Featherstone has room for 615 inmates.

In April it emerged teenage burglars locked up for breaking into Wolverhampton homes had been given 72 PlayStations to enjoy paid for by the taxpayer.

Inmates at Brinsford Young Offenders’ Institution were also said have been offered driving lessons.
