Bryan Robson today blamed injuries and a lack of financial backing for getting the Hawthorns axe.But he believes the squad will be strong enough to gain promotion for the new manager.
“We’ve had some injuries and Nathan Ellington has never really been one hundred per cent fit this season but that’s football,” said Robson.
“I do believe it’s a really good squad and I’m really pleased with what I have done since I’ve been at Albion.
“When I joined there were no players of any real value but I feel I’ve left the club with a £30m squad.
“I’m pleased that I’ve built the club that way, we’ve got an Academy now and the training ground is excellent.
“Hopefully I’ve given something back in just under the three years I’ve been at the club.
“The real icing on the cake while I was at Albion was keeping them up in the Premier League when we did the Great Escape.
“But I feel that if we had invested well in January last season we would not have got relegated.
“I wanted to bring in Ugo Ehiogu and Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink but couldn’t because of finances.
“Because of the long term injuries to Thomas Gaardsoe and Neil Clement this season it has weakened the squad. And it got worse when Curtis Davies broke his foot. Because of that I would have liked to have maybe strengthened the centre-half position.
“But when everyone in the squad is fully fit and healthy I still feel this squad will get promoted. I firmly believe that.
“I am disappointed to leave because I am sure I would have got them back in the Premiership.
“It’s been a little bit of a stuttery start but we should have finished Southend off on Saturday and we had enough chances to beat Preston. As the season goes on I am sure the players have the class and the quality to win the type of games we are talking about.
“Albion are only five points off the leaders and I am convinced the players are good enough to take them back to the Premier League.”
