Top name at festival

reel.jpgA top British film director is to visit Stafford to open the town’s annual film festival.

Debbie Isitt’s new movie Confetti will open the festival at the Gatehouse Theatre on Tuesday, October 3 at 7.30pm.

Before the screening of the black comedy she will be officially opening the festival and giving a talk about her work.

The Black Country-born writer and director has worked on numerous theatre, television and feature film productions

She recently won the best writer award for her adapted teleplay for the children’s drama The Illustrated Mum at the prestigious British Academy Children’s Film and Television Awards (BAFTA) where the series also won Best School Drama.

Confetti is her second feature film as writer and director, following her 2000 black comedy Nasty Neighbours which starred Ricky Tomlinson.

The new film stars comedian Jimmy Carr, Martin Freeman and Jessica Stevenson.

It follows the fortunes of three couples trying to win a magazine competition for their dream wedding.

Stafford Film Theatre was to have shown the award-winning film The Wind That Shakes The Barley on October 3 at the Gatehouse, but the Ken Loach movie has now been switched to the following day.

The festival runs until October 10.

The festival will also include the annual community film which is based on the history of the Victoria Park Pleasure Grounds and was filmed recently starring local people.

The festival will celebrate the 800th anniversary of the signing of the town’s charter and will offer top films including The Proposition directed by John Hillcoat.

An Oscar’s style celebration night will take place on Monday, October 9, at Stafford Gatehouse Theatre, with prizes and cash presented to category winners in the festival competition.
