It’s a bit early for Christmas, but what is possibly the best present for Star Trek fans is sitting unwanted in the Black Country.
More than 250 videos of the American 1960s science fiction series, believed to be a complete set, have been recovered by city recycling firm Recyk.
They were left behind by a fan who simply did not have room in his house for them anymore. Now the business in Park Village, Wolverhampton is expecting a flock of Trekkies or collectors to come forward .
Andrew Barrs from Recyk, based in Wood Street, said it was an extremely unusual find.
“It’s not very often we get something like this, especially in such good condition,” he said.
“We got them from a house collection. It’s a shame the guy had to give them away because he must have spent a long time collecting all of them.
“It has even got the very first episode. We are pretty sure it is a full set.
“We are really hoping there is a Star Trek fan out there that wants them. We are open to offers.”
Star Trek, famously starring Mr Spock, was aired for the first time 40 years ago this month. It proved so popular with science fiction fans that is took a life of its own, running for six television series and 10 feature films, and spawned hundreds of novels and computer and video games.
All are set within the same fictional universe created by Gene Roddenberry. The show depicts a post Second World War future in which human beings have united with other species of the galaxy to form the United Federation of Planets.
Recyk is a community group which aims to take other people’s rubbish and turn it into someone else’s treasure.
They trawl houses for hidden gems, and families having clear-outs regularly top up Recyk’s containers in Bilston and Bushbury.
Recent finds have included two fruit machines, a near perfect piano and a huge papier mache Chinese dragon.
