A netball training facility costing £500,000 is set to be built in Stourport as one of only five in the country to prepare players for the 2012 Olympics.Stourport High School in Minster Road has been chosen by sport bosses as the venue for a Netball Centre of Excellence for the Midlands region.
The project is expected to get the seal of approval from the district council at a meeting tonight.
Councillors are set to give the go-ahead to a £35,000 cash injection alongside an investment of around £100,000 from the county council.
Sport England is expected to provide the rest of the funding using National Lottery cash.
The school could see six new netball pitches built and a training centre, making it one of the premier facilities for sport in the Midlands.
Stourport High School already boasts some of the best outdoor training facilities for children with hockey and football pitches and an athletics track.
The aim of the centre is to help produce Britain’s best netball players in time for the London Olympics of 2012.
Building work on the project could start in the new year.
Wyre Forest leisure chief, Councillor Nathan Desmond, said: “This is a very exciting development which will put Stourport on to a national sporting map.
“The project will help produce some of the Olympic stars of the future as well as create an important community facility which will benefit a wide range of people.
“It will be one of only five in the country and will be the centre for the Midlands region which will be a very impressive achievement.
“Stourport will be at the heart of producing some of the country’s finest Olympians which will will make the town and the school even more proud of themselves.”
The pitches will also be available for clubs in the community to use.
