It’s the green, green grass of Brum - on the roof of one its best-known landmarks. The revamped Fort Dunlop now boasts the longest roof garden in the UK, marking the green shoots of revival for the iconic building overlooking the M6.The wraps will soon come off the new-look building, which is being transformed from a crumbling reminder of past glories into a thriving new hotel, office and shopping complex.
The impressive garden, made of real grass, sits on top of the seven-storey high building and just along from the new Fort Dunlop sign above the new 100-bed hotel extension.
The grass, imported from Germany, has been chosen for its low maintenance and will also enhance the insulation of the building.
Rolling out for 170 metres, it offers stunning views and developers Urban Splash, who specialise in transforming city centre sites, say that it could host fun functions.
Nathan Cornish, the company’s development director, said: “Fort Dunlop will live again as a high performance commercial space. It’s taken a lot of labour and love and Brummies now have a city beacon to be proud of.”
The £50m renovation is due to open on December 1.
