Mosque plan for scout hut

A £1.2 million mosque could be built to replace a former scout hut in Brierley Hill which has been used as a makeshift mosque by more than 100 Muslims.

Members of the Rizvia Mosque are hoping to win planning permission for the building, which will also be used as a Muslim community centre.

About 150 people have been using the hut in Trinity Street for daily worship since 1998 but are now hoping to replace it with the purpose-built mosque.

It comes as plans for a new mosque in Dudley remain in limbo after years of wrangling.

Rizvia general secretary Mohammed Rashid said: “At the moment we are using the scout hut as our mosque but we cannot teach any lessons for the kids or other people there.

“We need to give a good teaching to these kids because there is no place for them to play or learn at the moment and they are hanging around on streets. We want to cut this out.

“If we give them something to do then that is the best way to keep them busy.”

Harry Paneser, of the Birmingham-based Archi-tekt Partnership, said he was pleased with the design of the building, which will feature a glass dome and minaret doubling as a fire exit. “The association wanted something that looked futuristic and like a community centre at the same time,” he said.
