Joseph’s dream of a show

From its humble beginnings as a 20-minute long school concert in March, 1968, at the Old Assembly Hall, Colet Court, Hammersmith, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Joseph And The Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat has grown to become one of the world’s most popular musicals.

The pair had phenomenal success with Jesus Christ Superstar, and it was this that enabled Joseph to evolve into the show we have today.

Entirely sung, the show’s appeal slowly grew and it was eventually expanded and reopened at the London Palladium in 1991, going on to break box office records.

Starring Jason Donovan in the title role and later Philip Schofield, the show ran for two hours was seen by over 2 million people during its two and-a half-year run which grossed over £47 million. It is this performing version which has been seen touring the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and Germany to great acclaim in recent years. Featuring the songs Any Dream Will Do, Jacob And Sons, Close Every Door and One More Angel In Heaven, the show is returning to Wolverhampton Grand Theatre for one week from Monday, June 26. Taking the lead role will be former Hollyoaks star Craig Adams. It will also feature an on-stage choir made up of hand-picked local children. In 1999 the production was filmed with an all star cast including Donny Osmond, Joan Collins, Richard Attenborough and Maria Friedman.
